US Withdrawal from Vietnam
7
The U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam culminated in 1973, following the signing of the Paris Peace Accords on January 27, 1973. The agreement aimed to end direct American military involvement in the Vietnam War. It called for a ceasefire, the withdrawal of U.S. troops, and the return of American POWs.
Despite the agreement, fighting between North and South Vietnam continued. The U.S. provided military aid to South Vietnam but did not reintroduce troops. In April 1975, North Vietnamese forces captured Saigon, leading to the fall of South Vietnam and the official end of the war.
The withdrawal marked a significant turning point, reflecting a shift in U.S. foreign policy and leaving a lasting impact on American society and politics.
