Sabbath keepers misunderstand the essence of the New Testament. Jesus fulfilled the Old Covenant, making the legalistic observance of the Sabbath obsolete. Early church leaders, such as Athanasius, clearly taught that the Sabbath was tied to the old creation, but Christians now honor the Lord's Day—Sunday—as the day of resurrection, symbolizing the new creation. Paul in Galatians sharply rebukes those who hold onto the old law, saying that relying on it for righteousness makes Christ's sacrifice meaningless. Sabbath keepers cling to a shadow of the past, not realizing that the true substance is found in Christ.
