I recently tested a multicoloured hunting flashlight from VASTFIRE, the VA-802 Three Colour Predator flashlight, now this earlier and easier to use model has come my way. Like the VA-802 this flashlight has a brightness of 1000 lumens but differs in several other ways most important being that this torch has a single 4 colour LED, a detachable pressure trigger and a zooming option.

I received the 16.5 x 4 x 3 cm 216g flashlight in a plain plastic storage case with no external packaging. Inside was the torch itself, two 18650 rechargeable Batteries (one installed) , an external Battery Charger, a AAA battery adapter, a charging cable, a battery diameter adapter, and a two pin USA power adapter. No user guide was included, which was a pity. Build quality, as is always with VASTFIRE is first rate, with the flashlight made from heavy duty aluminium alloy and everything else equally robust and well made.

This heart of the set is a rather basic IP65 waterproof torch. The flashlight is powered by a single 18650 Lithium Polymer battery which is recharged through the supplied external charging unit or using the grommet protected micro-USB port on the torch itself. The inclusion of a spare battery in the kit is a useful bonus as is the AAA battery adapter and a clear adapter tube which fits around the 18650 battery and the removal of which allows other battery types to be used. The crenellated lens protector at the front of the torch can be unscrewed to give access to the lens within, to what purpose I am not sure.

When used as a regular torch it is not too exciting. The ‎1000 Lumen power output is relatively low and there is a single light level with no option for dimming or strobing. However, this torch comes into it own when used with the coloured LEDs. Unlike the VA-802 which had separate exchangeable LED units, this flashlight has a single LED with four colour elements - white, Ultraviolet, red and green. These are actual mini-LEDS and not just filters or gels with a maximum light throw of 200 m (depending on the colour). Just press the button to scroll through the colours and switch off. Push and pull the flashlight head to zoom in and out.
The light modules available are:
Green light (555 nm) promotes detail in outdoor use, excellent on green vegetation.
Red light (660 nm) illuminates targets at night to aid in night vision. Ideal for light shy wildlife.
Ultra Violet light (365-380 nm) illuminates organic and other trails and spills. Also is used to see at night without inhibiting natural night vision.
White light ( 6000K). is for general use.

This is a decent quality but rather basic zooming torch which comes into its own when used for nightime wildlife observation. Changing light colour modes is quick and simple and the torch is well-made, built to last and has excellent battery life. If all you want is a simple torch for home use then there are better options out there, but if you need a specialist flashlight for nightime wildlife or hunting use then for the price of £34.99 this would be a pretty good buy.
