What It Means to Be a Godly Man and How to Level Up in Life
In 1 Timothy 6:11, Paul gives us a clear picture of what a godly man looks like:
'But as for you, O man of God, flee from these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness.
Notice that Paul says to 'pursue' righteousness, godliness, and faith. Being a godly man is a daily pursuit. It’s not a one-time event; it’s a lifestyle.
So how do we start improving? Let's begin with the spiritual aspect. The Bible makes it clear that the first step to becoming a better man is growing closer to God. This involves daily prayer, meditating on His Word, and applying it to your life. Proverbs 3:5-6 says:
'Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.'
We often rely too much on ourselves. A godly man submits his plans, decisions, and ambitions to God. When we trust Him fully, He leads us on the path to becoming the best version of ourselves.
Mentally, we must sharpen ourselves through learning and discipline. Romans 12:2 tells us:
'Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.'
This transformation happens when we fill our minds with God's truth, healthy knowledge, and positive habits. Challenge yourself to grow mentally by learning new skills, setting goals, and staying disciplined in everything you do.
A godly man also works to improve his relationships. Whether you're single, married, a father, or a friend, your relationships are a reflection of your walk with Christ. Proverbs 27:17 says:
'As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.'
Surround yourself with people who help you grow spiritually and challenge you to be better. Build strong, godly relationships with your spouse, children, and friends. Love and serve them selflessly.
"Colossians 3:19 also gives us guidance on how to love others:
'Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.'
Kindness, patience, and love should characterize all our relationships, whether at home, work, or in the community.
Becoming a better man isn't about achieving perfection but about daily progress. Philippians 3:13-14 encourages us:
'Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.'
Every day is an opportunity to grow. Don't dwell on past mistakes or failures—press forward, always seeking to improve spiritually, mentally, physically, and relationally. As godly men, our goal is to continually pursue righteousness and Christlikeness
So, if you want to become a better man in all aspects of your life, it starts with God. Pray daily, read His Word, and live it out. Take care of your body, sharpen your mind, and nurture your relationships. And remember, every day is a new chance to grow.
