Summary:
Someone had already swapped the stock pickups for the EMG 81/85 combo. Whilst I think EMGs are decent pickups, i feel they take the Les Paul out of the Les Paul. My experience has been that passive pick ups take advantage of an instrument when it sounds fantastic acoustically. As if you can actually “hear the wood”. This LP sounds great even before you plug it in. I believe it would sound more like a Les Paul with passive pickups.

EMGs sound like EMGs no matter what the guitar sounds like prior to plugging it in. They always sound the same. They have their place and I give them kudos for consistency. However, for me, I don’t feel they should be in this guitar.

This LP plays really great, it’s. Like having a tree over your shoulders(heavy). Like most Gibsons, the tuning would slip(evil G string). I replaced the bridge with a locking tonepros bridge and that really helped the tuning by at least 90%. Everyone says the Gibson tuning issues is the angle of the headstock. I’m not going to argue that may be an issue. However, Gibson bridges seem to waddle back-and-forth on their posts. I have found replacing the stick bridge with a tonepros locking bridge is the answer for me.

So ultimately, I have parted ways with this guitar. It was a fantastic piece but just not for me. I didn’t wanna go through the hassle of pick up replacement and replacing all of the electronics, bumblebee cabs etc. etc. Also I do enjoy bigger jumbo frets than what was in this guitar. It is a guitar that will ask someone a lifetime so it is a great piece overall.
