The Tingler (1959)
The Tingler (1959) is a cult classic horror film directed by William Castle and starring Vincent Price. The movie centers around a bizarre creature called "The Tingler," which is said to live inside the human spine. The Tingler feeds on fear, growing stronger when its host experiences intense terror. According to the film, the only way to stop The Tingler from killing its host is by screaming, which paralyzes the creature.
Dr. Warren Chapin, played by Vincent Price, is a scientist studying the effects of fear on the body. His experiments lead to the discovery of The Tingler, and chaos ensues when the creature is accidentally unleashed, threatening those around him. One of the movie's most famous gimmicks is the "Percepto" experience, where theater seats were rigged to give electric shocks to audiences at specific moments in the film, enhancing the feeling of fear.
This campy, yet clever film has become a beloved piece of 1950s horror cinema, known for its unique blend of psychological horror and Castle’s trademark audience interaction techniques.
