"Released on March 28 1963 by Universal Pictures, The Birds is a natural horror thriller produced and directed by the “Master of Suspense” Alfred Hitchcock. It’s loosely based on the short story “The Birds” by English author Daphne Du Maurier. The movie was also partly inspired by a true event when on August 18 1961 in the seaside town of Capitola California hordes of seabirds dive bombed houses, crashed into cars and spewed up half digested food later determined to be caused by the ingestion of toxic algae. During production of the film they used majorly real trained birds. However they also invested around $200,000 into making mechanical birds for use in the film as well. The film required a myriad of special effects done by several different studios. The primary special effects artist was Ub Iwerks a long time animator at Walt Disney Studios and co-creator of Mickey Mouse. He got an Academy Award Nomination for his work on this film. Another important thing to note is there is no score for this movie with Hitchcock utilizing countless sound effects in counterpoint to calculated silences. The film stars some of the finest actors of the era including Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and breakout star Tippi Hedren in her film debut. This film does a great job of making you feel uneasy and on the edge of your seat while at the same time getting your guard down until things feel a little too safe before jolting you to your feet again."
