"I know it's gonna sound cheesy, but the moment we locked eyes there was just a... spark" Warner Bros has unveiled the first official trailer for Companion, a new horror thriller "love story" arriving in theaters in January 2025. They're setting this up to be the next new M3gan of the early 2025 movie season? "You are cordially invited to experience a new kind of love story." This is produced by the team behind Barbarian, but comes from a director making his first feature film. Starring Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén & Rupert Friend. Companion is said to be a sci-fi horror, though it's hard to tell. Did this guy make androids, or a medicine to control people, or what exactly is the concept? It's certainly a compelling teaser that's for sure! Just enough footage to make you wonder WTF is going on?!

Here's the first look teaser trailer for Drew Hancock's horror film Companion, direct from YouTube:

New Line Cinema—the studio that brought you The Notebook—and the unhinged creators of Barbarian cordially invite you to experience a new kind of love story. Companion is written and directed by up-and-coming American writer / filmmaker Drew Hancock, making his feature directorial debut after directing for various TV shows including "Jimmy Kimmel Live", "Cautionary Tales of Swords", "The Mountain" previously. Produced by Zach Cregger (of Barbarian), Roy Lee, J.D. Lifshitz, Josh Mack, Raphael Margules. A BoulderLight Pictures Production, in association with Vertigo Entertainment/Subconscious. With cinematography by Eli Born, and music composed by Hrishikesh Hirway. Warner Bros will debut Hancock's Companion movie in theaters nationwide starting on January 10th, 2025 next year.
The teaser trailer for Companion, produced by Barbarian breakout helmer Zach Cregger and directed by first-timer Drew Hancock, initially sets the film up as a millennial love story. Set to the strains of The Flamingos’ “I Only Have Eyes for You,” the trailer begins with text onscreen teasing the film is from “the studio that brought you The Notebook.” The trailer soon subverts that syrupy promise.

Yellowjackets breakout Sophie Thatcher plays a woman who seemingly is being romanced at gunpoint by a mysteriously smiling Jack Quaid. In one scene, she is chained to a chair while Quaid wines and dines her. In another, he or someone else chases and then drags her through a forest by the ankle. At one point, she stabs an assailant in the neck. Back at the table, she stares at Quaid and holds her hand over a candle’s flame until her arm catches fire.

Deadline understands that Cregger initially eyed Companion as his directorial follow-up to Barbarian, though the team wound up setting the project as the directorial debut of Drew Hancock, who penned the script.

Barbarian producer BoulderLight Pictures set up Companion at New Line. The film is the first produced under the banner’s first-look deal with the studio. New Line previously won a heated auction for Weapons — the second feature from writer-director Cregger to be produced by both BoulderLight and Vertigo Entertainment.

Producers are BoulderLight’s Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz, Vertigo’s Roy Lee, and Cregger. BoulderLight’s Tracy Rosenblum and Vertigo’s Andrew Childs exec produce.

Sophie Thatcher is a certified scream queen.

The “Yellowjackets” breakout star has gone on to appear in “The Boogeyman,” act opposite Hugh Grant in A24’s buzzy “Heretic,” and now lead elusive horror-thriller “Companion” alongside Jack Quaid.

“Companion” only has a mysterious faux ad for its tagline, reading, “Hey you. Tired of swiping? Sick of getting ghosted? Are you feeling like a part of you is missing? FindYourCompanion.com is guaranteed to find you a Companion who’s made for you.”

The teaser trailer does show Thatcher seemingly being stalked, chased, and perhaps even murdered, before then getting her hand lit on fire from love interest for Quaid’s character. Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend also star.

Drew Hancock (“My Dead Ex,” “Suburgatory”) writes and directs the film, which hails from “Barbarian” filmmakers Zach Cregger, Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, and Roy Lee, who all produce “Companion.” Tracy Rosenblum and Jamie Buckner executive produce. Nancy Nayor, who cast “Barbarian,” was the casting director on the film.

“New Line Cinema — the studio that brought you ‘The Notebook’ — and the unhinged creators of ‘Barbarian’ cordially invite you to experience a new kind of love story,” the promo teases.

“Companion” has a slew of horror staples below the line: The cinematographer is Eli Born (“The Boogeyman,” “Hellraiser”), with Scott Kuzio (“Dumb Money,” the “Fear Street” trilogy) as the production designer. The editors are Brett W. Bachman (“The Fall of the House of Usher,” “Pig”) and Josh Ethier (“Don’t Move,” “Orphan: First Kill”). The costume designer is Vanessa Porter (“The Toxic Avenger,” “Archive 81”), and the composer is Hrishikesh Hirway (“Song Exploder,” “Everything Sucks!”) with music supervisor Rob Lowry (“Do Revenge,” “Miracle Workers”).

New Line Cinema presents “Companion,” which is a BoulderLight Pictures production in association with Vertigo Entertainment/Subconscious.

Meanwhile, the “Barbarian” team is continuing their partnership with New Line Cinema. Writer/director Cregger announced his sophomore film “Weapons” at the studio, along with BoulderLight Pictures and Vertigo Entertainment/Subconscious also producing.

“Companion” premieres in theaters January 10. Check out the teaser below.

Trailers
The first trailer for the thriller Companion has debuted. Yellowjackets' Sophie Thatcher, The Boys' Jack Quaid, What We Do In The Shadows' Harvey Guillén, The White Lotus' Lukas Gage, Never Have I Ever's Megan Suri, and Obi-Wan Kenobi's Rupert Friend star in the upcoming movie directed by Drew Hancock in his directorial debut. It is scheduled to release in theaters on January 10, 2025, and is being produced by New Line Cinema.

Warner Bros. has now released the trailer providing a first look at Companion, which reveals Quaid's character as a highly dangerous and disturbed individual. Quaid's character is seen smiling and sitting across the dinner table from Thatcher's character, who is handcuffed to her chair. Her narration about knowing when one meets the right person is eerily juxtaposed with footage of her hand on fire, Quaid's character joyfully pointing a gun at her, and her body soaked in blood. Watch the trailer below:

What This Means For Companion
Jack Quaid's Role Is Nothing Like His Character In The Boys

Companion's first trailer reveals that the story will revolve around Quaid playing a highly unstable individual who takes pleasure in seeing others hurt. This is a far cry from his role as Hughie Campbell in The Boys, where he is known for his kindness and for being the titular group's moral compass when they go too far. Meanwhile, Thatcher's Companion character is fighting to survive, but instead of this fight being in the wilderness as in Yellowjackets, it is in her relationship with Quaid's character.

The trailer's acknowledgment of Companion being produced by the same studio behind The Notebook and as "a new kind of love story" raises the potential for it to be a deeply twisted romance as well.

The movie was previously reported to be a science-fiction thriller, although the trailer only presents the story as a horror thriller. The science-fiction genre could still be a significant part of the story, but for now, Companion is being marketed as a thriller elevated by Quaid's unnerving performance and Thatcher's depiction of a woman clawing to survive despite the horrors she faces. The trailer's acknowledgment of Companion being produced by the same studio behind The Notebook and as "a new kind of love story" raises the potential for it to be a deeply twisted romance as well.

Our Take On The Companion Trailer
Jack Quaid tilting his head in Companion
As someone who has primarily seen Quaid in The Boys, I am intrigued to see him in a role that is such a stark contrast from Hughie. The shot of him casually watching the arm of Thatcher's character being lit on fire is an image that will linger with me for quite some time. Thatcher has been one of the best parts of Yellowjackets and looks to be putting on another stellar performance in Companion, whose story is bound to only get darker beyond what has already been shown.

There are love stories in films like "The Notebook" that are heartfelt, beautiful, deeply moving, and often agonizing. This film, however, embraces the whole agonizing part to tell a twisted love story about a young man who can't seem to let go of the one he loves -- mainly because he has cuffed her to a chair.

Check out the first official teaser trailer for "Companion," a new twisted romantic thriller from the producers of the hit horror movie "Barbarian."

Jack Quaid, from Amazon's "The Boys," and Sophie Thatcher, from Showtime's "Yellowjackets," star as a couple in a toxic relationship that quickly escalates from emotionally poisonous to seriously deadly. They lead a strong supporting cast that includes Lukas Gage (The White Lotus: Season 1), Megan Suri (It Lives Inside), Harvey Guillen (What We Do in the Shadows), and Rupert Friend (Homeland).

The film is written and directed by Drew Hancock, best known as a television comedy writer who has worked on shows like "Suburgatory," "My Dead Ex," and "Blue Mountain State." Hancock also served as a segment director for "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," the 2008 Spike Video Game Awards, and the 2007 sketch show "Acceptable TV." This film marks Hancock's feature directorial debut.

"Companion" is produced by comic actor-turned-horror filmmaker Zach Cregger, alongside producer Roy Lee and his producing partner Raphael Margules, the same team behind "Barbarian."

"Companion" is slated to open in theaters on January 10th.
