From the territory of Russia, birds migrate en masse to the south to spend the winter there. Birds begin to leave their native places at the end of September, and the rest will continue to arrive for about another month. At the end of September, mostly waterfowl - ducks and geese - will begin to fly away. In addition to geese, swans and ducks, many other species of birds also leave Russian regions for the winter, there are several hundred of them. These are larks, white storks, thrushes, swallows and others. Moreover, the geography of their travels during the cold season is very extensive: among the common wintering places are African countries, Iran, India. For example, the main wintering places of gray cranes from Western Siberia are in Iran.

In Iran, there is the island of Ashurade (Ashur-Ada), this is the only island of Iran in the Caspian Sea. Ashurade Island is a paradise for birdwatchers. The tiny island and its surrounding wetlands provide a rich ecological haven for numerous migratory birds. According to experts, in mid-winter the number of birds on the island exceeds a million.
