Kamala Harris Pledged to Prosecute Oil Companies Over Climate Change

UNKNOWN: “Thanks for coming back to South Carolina. I’ve talked to you before and always appreciate you. So, when you are president — (applause) — will you order your Justice Department, your Attorney General to investigate Chevron and Shell, companies for their part and their damage to our planet in this climate crisis?”

Harris: “So, thank you for that. And again, I will tell you what I’ve done, not just what I’m going to do. So — and then also going after the bad actors. Which means that I’m saying about these big oil companies, these fossil fuel companies, look, you should be really prepared to look at a serious fine or be charged with crime. Because here’s the thing. These big oil companies and these fossil fuel companies have been making so much money and profiting off of this pollution. And who are the most vulnerable to what we’re talking about, polluted air and water? It’s our communities. It’s poor people, it’s communities of color. And not unlike the tobacco companies, after years knew because they’ve done the research, they knew the harm that their product was causing. They were making so much money that they kept that secret. Same thing with these big oil companies. And they need to pay the price. So, yes is the answer. (applause)”
