Judy, the HEROIC DOG who served during World War II
Meet Judy, an extraordinary English Pointer who became a symbol of bravery during World War II. Born in Shanghai in 1936, Judy served aboard the HMS Gnat and later the HMS Grasshopper. When her ship was torpedoed by Japanese forces, she and the surviving crew found refuge on a deserted island. Judy's keen instincts led her to discover a freshwater spring, saving their lives.
Captured and imprisoned by the Japanese, Judy became the only animal officially registered as a prisoner of war. Throughout her captivity, she protected her fellow soldiers, often taking punishment in their place and providing vital emotional support. Her courage and loyalty earned her the PDSA Dickin Medal, recognizing her heroism and the lives she saved.
After the war, Judy returned to Britain with her companion, Frank Williams, where she was celebrated as a national hero. Her incredible story is a testament to the unbreakable bond between humans and animals in times of adversity.
