"He says we're trapped." "Who says?" "The man in my head." Peacock has unveiled the full official trailer for the series titled Teacup, a sci-fi horror apocalyptic survival series arriving for streaming soon. Trapped on a farm in rural Georgia, a group of neighbors must put aside their differences to unite when confronted with a mysterious, deadly threat. Ready to watch this October - it also just premiered at Fantastic Fest last weekend. Executive produced by James Wan, he explains: "Teacup defies easy labels... It's a genre-bending blend of horror, mystery, and drama, with layers that unfold like a captivating puzzle." The original novel it's "inspired by" titled "Stinger" takes place over the course of a single day in a town called Inferno, TX. It's visited by two different UFOs. So it's a battle between two aliens and humans are caught in the middle of it all? The sci-fi series stars Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman, Kathy Baker, Caleb Dolden, Emilie Bierre, Chaske Spencer, Boris McGiver, and Luciano Leroux. What was that?! I wish they'd show us more of the freaky horror happenings in this! But they can't in a trailer... I'm curious, looks scary & strange.

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Peacock's sci-fi series Teacup, direct from Peacock's YouTube:

McCulloch serves as writer and executive producer on “Teacup.” E.L. Katz will direct the first episode and executive produce. Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett all executive produce on behalf of Atomic Monster. Francisca X. Hu, Kevin Tancharoen, and McCammon all executive produce as well. Strahovski will produce in addition to starring. UCP is the studio.

“Teacup” is one of two recent series orders for Atomic Monster at Peacock. It was recently announced that the streamer had ordered an untitled espionage sci-fi thriller series from the company with Simu Liu attached to star. Thomas Brandon is the writer and co-showrunner of that series, with Jennifer Yale also joining as co-showrunner.

Yvonne Strahovski and Scott Speedman are a married couple whose troubled family life becomes all the more harrowing when faced with a mysterious threat in Teacup. Strahovski is a two-time Emmy and Golden Globe nominee, having found acclaim in everything from her breakout roles in NBC's spy comedy Chuck and Showtime's Dexter to Kiefer Sutherland's 24: Live Another Day and Elisabeth Moss' The Handmaid's Tale, among many others. Speedman similarly found his first breakout role on the small screen with J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves' Felicity before starring in the likes of the Underworld franchise, The Strangers and, most recently, as a series regular on Grey's Anatomy.

Strahovski and Speedman star in Teacup as Maggie and James Chenoweth, a couple living on an isolated ranch in Georgia with their teenage daughter, Meryl, young son, Arlo, and James' mother, Ellen, who is managing a terminal illness diagnosis. Maggie and James, whose marriage has been on the rocks for subtly referred to issues, find their family in danger when Arlo goes missing in the nearby forest, only for a mysterious man in a gas mask to turn up shortly after his return, painting a line around the farm and warning everyone within it not to cross, nor trust anyone.

NBC Universal's streaming service Peacock offers a wide variety of movies, TV shows, and even live events, with much more arriving every month.

Alongside Strahovski and Speedman, the ensemble Teacup cast includes Émilie Bierre as Meryl, Caleb Dolden as Arlo, The Ranch's Kathy Baker as Ellen, Blindspot alum Chaske Spencer, Evil's Boris McGiver and Marvel Cinematic Universe vet Rob Morgan. Hailing from Yellowstone alum Ian McCulloch and executive produced by The Conjuring Universe creator James Wan, the show is a chilling continuation of the small town puzzle box formula that has become popular in recent years.

Ahead of the show's premiere, Screen Rant interviewed Yvonne Strahovski and Scott Speedman to discuss Teacup, why they were drawn to McCulloch's vision for the horror series, capturing the troubled family dynamic at the show's heart, and praising the practical effects used to design the monstrous set pieces throughout the show.

Strahovski & Speedman Were Floored By The Character Work At The Heart Of Teacup
"I remember thinking, 'Wow, this is a really classy piece of writing...'"
Yvonne Strahovski as Maggie Chenoweth looking intensely out in a field in Teacup
Screen Rant: I've seen the first half of Teacup, and it is just gripping thus far. Yvonne, I'll start with you, and then Scott, what was it about this show and Ian's vision for your characters that really sparked both of your interest to be a part of it?

Yvonne Strahovski: I remember thinking, "Wow, this is a really classy piece of writing for what we're doing here. For horror, it's got a lot of depth to it," which is, I think, maybe surprising, and it's surprisingly emotional, as well. I remember sitting down with Ian and speaking to him about the project, and he just had such a great vision for it, as well, in what he wanted to focus on, even though it is a genre piece. So, yeah, I think it was a combination of the script and the people involved, and especially Ian, that got me excited to be part of this.

Scott Speedman: Yeah, for me, it's very similar to Yvonne. I had known Ian's writing from other things, and when I heard he was doing something in the horror space, I was very excited to read it, because I knew it was going to have his own unique style of writing. He writes a lot of interesting Western-type stuff, character-based things. So, I thought if there could be some meeting of the minds there, it could be something very unique for the horror space. And I was right, the scripts were great, and particularly the drama of the family dynamic, where it started and where it was going. I thought, "Wow, if we can get whatever's on the page here onto the screen, that's going to really work well."

The Duo Hope Audiences Will "Root For This Relationship That Is Broken"
"...I thought maybe we could win them back over time."
Scott Speedman as James Chenoweth leading Caleb Dolden's Arlo Chenoweth on a horse next to Emilie Bierre's Meryl Chenoweth and Yvonne Strahovski as Maggie Chenoweth in Teacup
Since you mentioned the family dynamic, I really find your characters' dynamic so fascinating to watch, as there does seem to still be an underlying love for each other there, even if, Scott, your character is maybe making more of the mistakes along the way. What was it like for you both really finding that dynamic with one another and making sure that audiences felt for these characters, even if they were on rocky ground?

Scott Speedman: Yeah, for me, I don't think there's any way to really control what the audience is going to do at this point in my career. I knew Yvonne has worked so well from other things, like Handmaid's and other stuff like that, and I could really see how she was going to be a great partner in the scenes we had to do throughout. So, instinctually. I was just like, "If we can get together and do what I do, and then definitely do what I think she's gonna be able to do, I think these scenes are gonna be really dynamic." And I do think the audience is going to come along for the ride, whether it's on the genre level, or the family dynamic level, where definitely my character is not in the best of lights. But hopefully, I thought maybe we could win them back over time.

Yvonne Strahovski: I love what we did with it, and I think that it's lovely to have such a thoughtful, amazing acting partner to get through these scenes, because they were pretty challenging. Scott is incredibly thoughtful, and I think the combination of having a thoughtful showrunner and some thoughtful actors, we really nutted this out in such a way where I think the audience is going to stay with us for this crazy ride. Because things get real weird [chuckles], and we really need them to stay on board with us, and we really need them to root for us, and root for this relationship that is broken.

Strahovski & Speedman Were "Blown Away" By The Show's Practical Effects
"...the craftsmanship of what these people did was amazing."
Scott Speedman as James looking concerned while holding a rifle in Teacup
Since we talk about the craziness, I'd love to hear what both of your reactions were when you saw what happens when someone goes on the other side of the line. Because even I, as a horror genre fan, was quite shocked by that visual.

Scott Speedman: I mean, for me, I was doing one of the first ones, I think, with a character in one of the earlier episodes. What was cool, and what was awesome was it wasn't looking at a tennis ball on a tripod, or a green screen kind of thing. Most of it was practical effects that were, you know, detailed later, so we actually had something amazing to work with. At this point in my career, I've done so much that it doesn't really do a lot to me. But I thought the artistry of the whole thing was what was mind-blowing to me.

Whether it was grotesque or not, or scary or not, was not the most interesting part. I was more interested in, "Wow, the craftsmanship of what these people did was amazing." And that we had this to look at was incredible. It's always fun. At the end of the day, you sort of have to just jump off the cliff and go on that ride with the craziness that's happening in front of you. And it was very easy to do with that Prop.

Yvonne Strahovski: Yeah, I think I came in a little bit late in seeing this amazing, I'm going to call it, sculpture, because it is a work of art. It's an amazing sculpture, and my first reaction was, I was genuinely blown away. We've been around the block, we've seen so many of these kinds of things, and this one really took my breath away. I thought it was extraordinary, I can't believe what they came up with. Because I remember reading it, and the description of it in word form was, "Wow."

But my first thought was, "How on earth are they going to create this? What's the visual going to look like?" It seemed like such a challenge, and it seemed like such a challenge, because it's hard to make it not look cheesy or just not kind of real, even though it's a real fantastical element of the show. But they really pulled it off to the point where I was really blown away.

Produced by horror maestro James Wan, the man behind “The Conjuring” and “Insidious” franchises, and developed and showrun by “Yellowstone” and “Chicago Fire” writer/producer Ian McCulloch, Peacock‘s upcoming thriller “Teacup” is looking to frighten audiences right in time for Halloween. The series is adapted from Robert McCammon’s New York Times bestseller, “Stinger,” which follows a collection of differing personalities as they unite to fight against a horrifying creature set on destroying a small, rural community. Moving the narrative from Texas to Georgia, “Teacup” stars Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Scott Speedman (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Rob Morgan (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), and Chaske Spencer (“Banshee”) and premieres on Peacock Thursday, October 10, with two episodes airing weekly through Halloween.

Wan produces the series under his Atomic Monster shingle, but the series’ directors are E.L. Katz (“The Haunting of Bly Manor”), John Hyams (“Chucky”), Chloe Okuno (“Watcher”), and Kevin Tancharoen (“The Brothers Sun”). The first two episodes premiered September 22 at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, followed by a Q&A with McCulloch and the cast. Universal Content Productions, a division of Universal Studio Group, also produces the series.

Choosing to downsize the source material, McCulloch said in a statement, “The series is now very much its own thing: a puzzle-box mystery, an edge-of-your-seat thriller, a can’t-but-must look horror story, a family drama, a science fiction epic—of the keyhole variety, of course. But as singular, strange, and surprising as I hope ‘Teacup’ is, all you need to do is peel away the layers, characters, situations, and mythology and look behind the thrills, chills, hairpin turns and make-you gasp reveals. Do all that and you’ll see, at its heart, ‘Teacup’ is still very much standing on the shoulders of ‘Stinger.’ Just as it should.”

Describing what appealed to him about the project, Wan said in a statement, “After reading Robert McCammon’s book ‘Stinger,’ the entire team at Atomic Monster felt a spark. The story had all the ingredients for a captivating series and Ian McCulloch had a vision to bring it to life in a fresh way that was both startling and darkly atmospheric, but filled with a rich sense of humanity — often lacking in edgy narratives. Add in our incredibly talented cast led by Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman and Chaske Spencer and fans are in for a true edge-of-your-seat experience.”

We’ve known for a little while now that The Handmaid’s Tale’s Yvonne Strahovski would be starring in a new Peacock horror series from James Wan’s Atomic Monster. But even with the arrival of promo material, the storyline surrounding the production has been rather mysterious. This weekend at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, the show will celebrate its world premiere, with the good folks behind the title giving those of us at home an official trailer to tide us over. Thanks to the new footage, we have a much better idea of the chaos that will break out when Teacup arrives on Peacock with a two-episode premiere on October 10.

With the upbeat tune playing at the top of the Teacup trailer, one could easily fall into thinking that the series will be a cheerful drama or even a rom-com, but don’t you worry, because it doesn’t last long. After alluding to the show’s title, with Strahovski’s character telling her son about the tempest and the teacup, a big storm begins to roll in with dark clouds covering the sky over the family’s farm. After a goat takes off from the barn, the young boy goes after him, following the animal into the dark, foreboding woods. When he returns, he tells his worried family that there’s a man in his head warning them all that something sinister is on the way — we love a spooky and all-knowing kid! The rest of the trailer is pretty trippy with a guy in a gas mask leaving the family with ominous messages and plenty of other jump scares that you’d expect from the man who brought audiences The Conjuring and Insidious franchises.

Along with Strahovski, Teacup also features the talents of Scott Speedman (Grey’s Anatomy), Chaske Spencer (The English), Rob Morgan (Don’t Look Up), Kathy Baker (Edward Scissorhands), Boris McGiver (House of Cards), Caleb Dolden (The Requiem Boogie), Emilie Bierre (Jenny) and Luciano Leroux (Yellowjackets). Ian McCulloch, who holds credits as a producer on such titles as Yellowstone and Chicago Fire, makes his showrunning debut with Teacup. He also produces alongside Wan and Wan’s Atomic Robot.

Ian McCulloch Describes ‘Teacup’ As “A Slow Burn”

In part, Teacup serves as a sort-of adaptation of Robert R. McCammon’s novel, Stinger. During a chat with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff over the summer at San Diego Comic-Con, McCulloch explained the major differences between the book and the show, and how he shifted it to better adhere to an on-screen, episodic telling.

"Stinger, the book, is gargantuan. It’s an epic novel. It's brash, it's got big set pieces, lots of characters, an entire town under siege and my vision when they asked if I wanted to adapt it was to flip it on its head, take all of that away. I wish I'd come up with this turn of phrase, but I wanted to turn it into a keyhole epic, which means a very large story told through a very small lens. So that's what I did. I took away most of the characters. I focused on the central family. I took away the town. I focused it on a secluded farm. I was saying before, we turn down the temperature. It's a slow burn as opposed to a big explosion of the book."

Fresh frights are coming to Peacock this fall, when the horror thriller Teacup debuts Thursday, Oct. 10, with the first two episodes.

Peacock on Sunday released the full-length trailer for the series — which you can watch above. Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Scott Speedman (Grey’s Anatomy) star as Maggie and James Chenoweth, two members of “a disparate group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive,” according to the official description.

James Wan (M3GAN, Annabelle) will executive-produce the series, which is inspired by Robert McCammon’s 1988 novel Stinger, with Ian McCulloch (Yellowstone) serving as showrunner. The cast also includes Chaske Spencer (Echo), Kathy Baker (Picket Fences), Boris McGiver (Evil), Caleb Dolden (Single Parents), Emilie Bierre (Transplant) and Luciano Leroux (Yellowjackets).

“Teacup defies easy labels,” Wan said in a statement. “It’s a genre-bending blend of horror, mystery, and drama, with layers that unfold like a captivating puzzle. It goes beyond chills and thrills and holds up a mirror to humanity, exploring the darkness that resides within us all.”

“Teacup” has set its spooky debut. UCP’s horror thriller will premiere its first two episodes on Peacock Thursday, October 10, followed by two episodes weekly. The final two will stream on Halloween.

The news was announced at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 24, during a panel featuring executive producer James Wan, executive producer and showrunner Ian McCulloch and stars Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman and Chaske Spencer. Wan is best known for co-creating the “Saw” and “Insidious” franchises and creating the “Conjuring” universe.

During the panel, multiple clips were shown for the audience in Ballroom 20, giving a sneak peek of what’s to come. While one was edited down to be less gory and disturbing, it was still very gory and very disturbing, proving to be a very Wan-like project. The crowd was asked not to spoil any specifics.

“Teacup,” inspired by Robert McCammon’s bestselling novel “Stinger,” follows a “disparate group of people in rural Georgia who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive.” However, very few details were revealed, so much so that it became a running joke during the hour-long conversation.

Wan was excited right away by the book “Stinger,” noting that his production company, Atomic Monster, “felt a spark” immediately.

“The story had all the ingredients for a captivating series and Ian McCulloch had a vision to bring it to life in a fresh way that was both startling and darkly atmospheric, but filled with a rich sense of humanity — often lacking in edgy narratives,” he said.

Wan added that the show “defies easy labels,” falling into multiple genres — “horror, mystery and drama, with layers that unfold like a captivating puzzle. It goes beyond chills and thrills and holds up a mirror to humanity, exploring the darkness that resides within us all.”

McCulloch said that since he’s not a “spectacle writer,” he wasn’t initially interested in adapting the novel. “But here’s the thing. I read ‘Stinger’ and it stayed with me. Wouldn’t leave me alone. I just couldn’t stop thinking about its razor-sharp premise, how it unfolds over the course of a single harrowing day, and about the relatable and real family McCammon puts center stage. That’s when the flash bang-light bulb idea hit,” he said. “What if I adapted Stinger in a way that honors the book and stays true to the kinds of stories I like to tell? Keep the conceit. Keep Stinger’s most effective elements. Take away the large ensemble. Take away the giant set pieces. Even take away the book’s crowded town setting.”

For him, the series stands on its own as “a puzzle-box mystery, an edge-of-your-seat thriller, a can’t-but-must look horror story, a family drama, a science fiction epic — of the keyhole variety, of course.”

Additional “Teacup” executive producers are Michael Clear, Rob Hackett, Francisca X. Hu and Kevin Tancharoen. The supporting cast includes Kathy Baker, Boris McGiver, Caleb Dolden, Emilie Bierre and Luciano Leroux.
