Leaders from the Asssociation of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, are meeting in Laos on Wednesday with a new peace plan for Myanmar on the agenda. The country is in the grip of a civil war after the military junta seized control in a coup in 2021.

One of the groups fighting the regime is the Arakan army in Myanmar's Rakhine state. Rohingya refugees who’ve fled the region say they're being forcibly recruited into the war. One of the so-called ‘recruiting’ grounds

is Cox’s Bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh, from where DW’s Arafatul Islam reports. We’re protecting the identities of those who’ve talked to us.

Our Asia-Pacific bureau chief Georg Matthes spoke with Lina Alexandra of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta, about what promise these talks hold for ending Myanmar's civil war.
