Are We Supposed to SELL EVERYTHING to Follow Jesus?

When the rich young ruler asked Jesus what he must do to be saved in Matthew 19, Jesus tells him to sell everything he owns and follow Him.

Does Jesus call US to sell everything too? Are we actually supposed to be homeless??

The early Christians did! They sold everything and lived together. Are WE supposed to do that???

God does call some people to that life. But He calls EVERYONE OF US to SPIRITUALLY "sell everything" and follow Him. How do you do that? Examine your own life. What are the things that you value more than following Jesus? That you would be unwilling to give up IF He asked you to? Is it your job, your family, your money, your goals? THOSE are the things keeping you from totally surrendering to Jesus.

WHY should we surrender everything to Jesus? The answer is in Jesus' full answer to the rich young ruler. He says, "If you want to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

Do you want to be COMPLETE? What is this "treasure in heaven"? Jesus isn't just talking about after you die. He said "The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!" That means here right now as the Holy Spirit who lives within every believer in Jesus! As you work to surrender everything to Him, in return He will bless you with the fruit of the Holy Spirit -- LOVE! JOY! PEACE! He will make you COMPLETE!!
