The fact is the damage in NC looks eerily similar to the Great Johnstown Flood of 1889:

And the damage in Johnstown Pennsylvania back in 1889 was caused by the failure of the South Fork Dam, 14 miles upstream from Johnstown!

Could this be what caused the most catastrophic damage in western NC?
