Thieves loot freight train on West Side, Chicago police say; at least 6 arrested

Chicago police are investigating a cargo theft that occurred Friday afternoon in the South Austin neighborhood, where a group of thieves ransacked a freight train.

Witnesses reported seeing at least a dozen individuals breaking into multiple containers for nearly an hour before police arrived.

Union Pacific stated that the train was stopped for an interchange when the theft occurred.

Officers responded around 4 p.m., drawing their weapons at a vehicle that attempted to flee the scene.

This incident marks the second recent cargo theft in the area, with prior thefts involving stolen merchandise, including TVs, ABC 7 Chicago has reported.
