We have an outstanding need to diversify our power within the US while keeping our carbon emissions lower. This can be done with clean burning coal that captures the carbon dioxide as electricity is being produced. These capture units aren't cheap and a new clean coal plant may cost around $2 - $3 billion a piece, about the same as a new nuclear plant. However, the cost is well worth the investment. We can construct polygeneration synthesis gas coal plants that manufacture electricity, vehicle fuels, chemicals and gases potentially all at the same time. This has the potential of creating a lot of industry. In addition, if we captured, compressed and transported the carbon dioxide and hydrogen from these plants, we could make even more chemicals and vehicle fuels. This is a much better option than capturing the carbon dioxide and just putting it underground.
