Prime Video has dropped the official trailer for the much-anticipated Australian version of “The Office,” premiering October 18th.

As the 13th iteration of the global hit franchise, this version makes history as the first to feature a female lead. Felicity Ward (“Time Bandits,” “The Inbetweeners 2”) stars as Hannah Howard, the new managing director of Flinley Craddick.

In the trailer, Ward’s character makes a major announcement to her staff: “As of today, we are all back in the office full-time,” which is met with less enthusiasm than she hoped: “What? That’s not good news.”

The series features an ensemble of Australian and New Zealand comedy talent, including Edith Poor (“The Power of the Dog”), Steen Raskopoulos (“The Duchess”), Shari Sebbens (“The Sapphires,” “Thor: Love and Thunder”), Josh Thomson (“How to Please a Woman,” “Young Rock”), and Susan Ling Young (“Reckoning,” “Hungry Ghosts”).

In “The Office,” Hannah Howard is the managing director of packaging company Flinley Craddick. When she gets news from Head Office that they will be shutting down her branch and making everyone work from home, she goes into survival mode, making promises she can’t keep in order to keep her “work family” together.

The staff of Flinley Craddick indulge her and must endure Hannah’s outlandish plots as they work toward the impossible targets that have been set for them.

The Australian version of “The Office” follows versions in France, Canada, Israel, India, and more countries. Earlier this year, a new iteration of “The Office” in the US was picked up to series at Peacock. It is, however, not a reboot or spinoff of “The Office,” but rather a new mockumentary show with a new cast set in the same universe.

The eight-part Australian Amazon Original series “The Office” is co-produced by BBC Studios Australia & New Zealand, Bunya Entertainment, and Amazon MGM Studios, and is based on a BBC Studios format. The series was developed for Australia by writers Julie De Fina (“Aftertaste”) and Jackie van Beek (“The Breaker Upperers”), with the pair also serving as executive producers. Kylie Washington (“Return to Paradise”) is executive producer with lead producer Sophia Zachariou (“Ladies in Black,” “The Moth Effect”) and producer Linda Micsko (“The Letdown,” “Laid”).
Felicity Ward stars as Hannah Howard, the first female boss in The Office franchise
The Office Australia premieres on Prime Video on October 18, 2024, available in 240 countries
Fans of The Office have something new to look forward to with the upcoming Australian adaptation of the beloved mockumentary. The official trailer for The Office Australia has been released, which stars comedian Felicity Ward in a new take on the iconic role of the office boss.

The series will premiere on Prime Video on October 18 and will be available for streaming in 240 countries worldwide, with the exception of the United States.

For the first time in The Office's history, a woman plays the often clumsy but endearing office manager. Felicity Ward, known for her sharp comedic skills, will play Hannah Howard, managing director of Flinley Craddick, a Sydney-based packaging company. Ward's portrayal of Hannah in the trailer resembles Michael Scott (Steve Carell) from the US version.

Ward expressed her excitement for the role, saying, “I’ve never been so excited to play an optimistic incompetent trapped in her own delulu. Hannah Howard is every bit the disappointment of a boss we’d all hope she’d be.”

Hannah's quirky behavior and eagerness to keep her office running despite impending doom promises a series full of comedic moments. Her enthusiasm for teamwork, even when misguided, foreshadows the comedic dynamics to come.

Ward is joined by a talented cast of Australian actors, many of whom are experienced performers. The main cast includes Edith Poor as Lizze Moyle, the receptionist and productivity manager; Steen Raskopoulos as Nick Fletcher, a sales representative; Shari Sebbens as Greta King, another sales representative; and Josh Thomson as Martin Katavake, the human resources manager.

Jonny Brugh plays Lloyd Kneath, the head of IT, and Susan Ling Young portrays Tina Kwong, another sales representative. Raj Labade plays intern Sebastian Roy, Lucy Schmidt plays head of finance Deborah Leonard, Zoe Terakes plays warehouse manager Stevie Jones, and Pallavi Sharda plays regional director Alisha Khanna. With such a strong cast, The Office Australia is poised to deliver laughs while remaining true to the heart of the original series.

Guest stars Susie Youssef, Justin Rosniak, Carlo Ritchie, Rick Donald, and Chris Bunton play various roles, ensuring that the series appeals to a wide range of Australian comedy fans.

The main plot of The Office Australia revolves around Hannah Howard's struggle to keep her Flinley Craddick branch open after learning that the head office intends to close it and transition to remote work. Determined to keep her work family together, she makes promises she cannot keep and sets nearly impossible goals for her employees.

Hannah's clueless optimism shines through in the trailer, where she pitches absurd ideas to keep the office afloat. From awkward team meetings to bizarre bonding exercises, the show sticks to the popular format of the OG series while adding its own Australian twist.

The first trailer for Amazon's female-led Australian remake of The Office has arrived – and fans don't know how to feel about it.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed below, we're introduced to the newest iteration of Michael Scott/David Brent – who is just as high-strung and quirky as her precedents (though fans of both the US and UK Office don't seem too impressed.)

Per the official synopsis, "Hannah Howard (Felicity Ward) is the managing director of Flinley Craddick. When she gets news that her branch will be shut down to work remotely, she goes into survival mode, making promises she can't keep in order to keep her 'work family' together."

The cast includes Edith Poor as Lizzie, the Dwight/Gareth role; Steen Raskopoulos as sales rep Nick, playing the Tim/Jim role; and Shari Sebbens as Greta, the Pam/Dawn role (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Josh Thomson, Jonny Brugh, Susan Ling Young, Raj Labade, Lucy Schmidt, Zoe Terakes, Pallavi Sharda, Claude Jabbour and Jason Perini also star.

Prime Video has released the first trailer for the female-led, Australian version of The Office. Starring Felicity Ward as Hannah Howard (the Australian equivalent of Michael Scott), the series puts a more modern spin on the now well-worn workplace mockumentary sitcom. Set in the present day, the series follows the employees of Finley Craddick as they're forced back into the office full-time, following the COVID pandemic.

The new trailer gives audiences the best look yet at the show's zany cast of characters. No office manager would be complete without their own Dwight Schrute, and Hannah's comes in the form of productivity manager Lizzie (Edith Poor). Finley Craddick even has its own Jim and Pam stand-ins in Nick (Steen Raskopoulos) and Greta (Shari Sebbens). The trailer features much of the same cringy, awkward humor that defined both the U.K. and U.S. versions of the show. Check out the trailer below:

Of course, it wouldn't be The Office without some workplace shenanigans. While the U.K. and U.S. versions featured enough workplace violations to ensure that every member of staff at Wernham Hogg and Dunder Mifflin should be fired, the Australian version is dialing things up to 11. Bringing in a pet crow to work, sleeping at the office, and browsing the dark web on a work computer, are just a tease of what's to come in the new show.

Fans React to The Office Remake Trailer

The Office fans got their first look at the Australian remake in August, and the online reaction was mixed. A certain section of fans immediately slated the concept because of its female lead character, while others decided to wait for a trailer, and give the show a chance. Now that the trailer has been released, the fan base has collectively banded together to declare their hatred for the new show, and comments under the footage are filled with negative reactions to what's been shown.

"Dear Prime. It's not too late to delete this," wrote one user. Another comment noted the seemingly forced comedy in the trailer, highlighting that the actors look like they're acting, writing "They look and sound like they are trying too hard to be funny. There doesn’t feel like there’s the candidness of a documentary either." Another user remembered their pessimistic reaction to the first look image, saying that the trailer is far worse than they thought it would be. They wrote:

"I thought this was going to be bad when I first read about it and was actually surprised to find that it’s actually worse than I could have possibly imagined."

Social media is just as unkind to the trailer. Underneath the official X post from Prime Video AU/NZ, dozens of Aussie users shared their unfiltered opinions of the trailer. The days of Michael Scott serving as the boss of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company's Scranton branch are long over, but The Office continues to expand its franchise with more spinoffs. The next one will imagine office life in Australia, and a sneak peek has been reavealed by way of a new trailer.

Shared by Prime Video ahead of the show's Oct. 18 premiere, the trailer introduces Felicity Ward as Hannah Howard, marking the first time a female actor has led an Office series. Hannah works as the managing director of a packaging company that's not so different from Dunder Mifflin, as she's even joined by several characters who may feel reminiscent of those from the well-known UK and United States versions of The Office. While each international version tends to have its differences, the premise of The Office remains the same. The show takes place in an office firm, which features a general manager doing anything in their power to save their branch from shutting down. The series features numerous antics and shenanigans that often are never seen in an actual professional setting, yet somehow it sheds a comedic light on a white-collar work environment.

The Office was first released in the UK in 2001 and ran for 2 seasons, starring Ricky Gervais, Martin Freeman, and Mackenzie Crook. It won the Best New TV Comedy award during the 2001 British Comedy Awards, then later won Best TV Comedy a year later. Following its success, an American Adaptation was released in 2005, starring Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, and Jenna Fischer. The U.S. version of The Office ran for 9 seasons and out of the 44 PrimeTime Emmy Award Nominations, 5 of them were won, such as "Outstanding Comedy Series" in 2006.

The Office Australia will enter Prime Video on October 18, 2024. Meanwhile, the U.S. and UK adaptations are available to stream on Peacock.

The Office remake's Michael Scott counterpart was "approved" by the show's original star. The mockumentary sitcom originally began as a British series created by and starring Ricky Gervais as David Brent, the office's general manager, which ran for two seasons from 2001 to 2003. The American version, adapted for NBC by Greg Daniels, starred Steve Carell as the regional manager Michael Scott, airing for nine seasons from 2005 to 2013. Now, two more remakes of The Office are on the way, including an Australian version starring Felicity Ward as managing director Hannah Howard.

Appearing at Prime Video's Trailblazers event celebrating women in film and television (via Deadline), Felicity Ward revealed that Ricky Gervais "approved" of her female lead in the Australian version of The Office. Not only did the show's original creator and star approve, but he was "very excited" about the prospect of a female lead, Ward revealed. Read her full comments below:

Ricky Gervais has approved of a female lead — he’s very excited about a female lead. Just in case anyone is angry.

How Hannah Howard Compares To David Brent & Michael Scott
It's The First Time The Gender Has Been Changed

In the British version of The Office, Ricky Gervais originated the awful boss character, David Brent. He is both immature and arrogant, but he views himself as a lovable rouge within the business world and a Renaissance man with many talents. While he believes he is humorous, compassionate, and well-respected, those around him find him irritating, tactless, and cringeworthy. His obliviousness to his own incompetence, constant craving for approval, and antics that regularly get him into trouble serve as the central driving force behind the sitcom.

Based on David Brent, Steve Carell starred as Michael Scott in the American version of The Office and arguably created the definitive version of the character. Still, David Brent provided much of the inspiration for Michael Scott, a well-meaning individual whose clueless attempts at humor frequently irritate and offend his employees, and is occasionally reprimanded by his superiors. The Office has been adapted in several different countries with the David Brent character reimagined many times, though the Australian version is the first time the gender was changed. Additionally, Hannah Howard seems more empowering and confident, rather than aggressive or overbearing.

Our Take On Ricky Gervais Approving The Australian Office's Female Lead
Will More Tune In To Watch?

Though the trailer for the Australian remake of The Office received a negative response, the fact that Ricky Gervais not only approved of the female lead, but is excited about it, could get others on board as well. The problem is that the Australian version premieres October 18 on Prime Video in over 240 countries, though it won't be available in the United States until a later date. When it does become available in more countries, it will be interesting to see how Hannah Howard is received compared to the previous iterations of the character in The Office.
