U.S. Vice President Spiro T. Agnew Made History By Resigning From Office, Becoming Only The Second Vice President In American History To Do So.

His Resignation Followed Allegations Of Bribery, Tax Fraud, And Corruption, Primarily Dating Back To His Tenure As Governor Of Maryland And Baltimore County Executive.

Agnew, A Rising Republican Star Known For His Fiery Rhetoric, Particularly Against The Media And Anti-Vietnam War Activists, Initially Denied The Charges.

However, As Federal Prosecutors Pursued Him, It Became Evident That His Political Career Could Not Survive The Mounting Legal Pressure.

Agnew’s Resignation Occurred During A Particularly Tumultuous Time In U.S. History, Coinciding With The Watergate Scandal That Had Already Entangled President Richard Nixon.

On The Same Day, Agnew Appeared In Federal Court In Baltimore, Where He Pleaded "No Contest" To A Single Count Of Tax Evasion, Receiving Three Years Of Probation And A $10,000 Fine.

His Resignation Created A Constitutional Dilemma, As There Was No Clear Precedent For Replacing A Vice President Mid-Term Since The 25th Amendment, Which Had Been Ratified In 1967, Had Yet To Be Tested.

Agnew’s Departure Opened The Door For Gerald Ford’s Appointment As Vice President Under The 25th Amendment, A Critical Development Since Ford Would Later Ascend To The Presidency Following Nixon’s Resignation In August 1974.

Agnew’s Fall From Grace Remains A Significant Example Of How Legal Misconduct Can Collide With Political Accountability In The Executive Branch Of American Government.
