Celebrated South Korean Best Picture Oscar-winning director of ‘Parasite,’ Bong Joon-ho makes his long-awaited return with the sci fi film Mickey 17. Based on the 2022 Edward Ashton sci-fi novel ‘Mickey 17,’ the film follows a ‘disposable’ space expedition employee who’s tasked with a dangerous life-threatening mission, getting cloned every time he dies.

Mickey 17 is the next highly anticipated movie from South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho and we are dying to know more. Following the mainstream success of Parasite (2019), the first foreign-language film to win the Oscar for Best Picture, Bong Joon-ho returns to sci-fi with a film that promises big ideas and lots of heart. Here's everything we know about Mickey 17 so far.

The movie is an adaptation of Edward Ashton's 2022 novel Mickey7 (not 17), which explores "themes of identity and immortality." It garnered tons of praise upon release and a big-screen adaptation was announced soon after. The mix of the high concept at the center of the story, the setting, and the clever humor understandably made it a perfect fit for Bong Joon-ho. He's made a name for himself as one of today's most apt filmmakers working to tackle heavy-hitting drama and absurdist situations at the same time.

Mickey 17 was originally scheduled to be released in the United States on March 29, 2024. It was, however, taken off Warner Bros. Discovery's theatrical schedule earlier this year, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire moving up to take over its slot.

So, why did Warner sacrifice such an attractive spring release? The explanation is quite actually simple: 2023's SAG-AFTRA strike had a major impact on a number of productions, including some that had already wrapped their principal photography. In the case of Mickey 17, which was shot in 2022, this affected its reshoots and therefore delayed the extensive post-production process too. On top of that, Warner Bros. Discovery believes Bong Joon-ho's next movie may be another big win with huge awards potential, making a winter 2025 release logical.

As it stands (we wouldn't be surprised if it's brought forward a bit), Mickey 17 will be released in the United States on January 31, 2025. Of course, it's coming exclusively to theaters.

Edward Ashton's novel follows Mickey Barnes, a disposable employee part of a human expedition that aims to colonize the ice world of Niflheim. If there's a mission that feels too dangerous, the crew uses Mickey. If he dies, a new body is 'born' with most of his memories intact. Yup, the basic premise sounds a bit like the extremely underrated space movie Moon by Duncan Jones.

Without getting into deeper spoilers, things get a bit more complex when Mickey7 is presumed dead and Mickey8 is generated; two "expendables" co-existing is a dangerous thing. Meanwhile, the colonization of Niflheim is going poorly, with the odd native species living there growing more and more curious. Soon, the story becomes more than just about the survival of Mickey7 and 8.

While the first trailer for the adaptation is meaty, most of the actual plot is being kept under wraps, although we can see that, at some point the Mickeys band together against the system. The synopsis that was released a while back teased a pretty faithful take on the novel, but you will have likely noticed the movie is titled Mickey 17. Why is that? Well, Bong Joon-ho's answer at CinemaCon 2024 was quick and to the point: "The number is the number of times he died. I killed him ten times more."

Bong Joon-ho has worked with an all-star cast on Mickey 17. Bong Joon-ho (Parasite, Okja) directed the movie from an adapted screenplay of Mickey7 written by the author, Edward Ashton, himself. Cinematographer Darius Khondji (Midnight in Paris, Uncut Gems) teamed up with the filmmaker following their collaboration on Okja (2017).

Yang Jin-mo, another regular collaborator, has returned to edit the movie following his Oscar nomination for Parasite. Likewise, music composer Jung Jae-il is also coming back after working with the filmmaker on Okja and Parasite.
Warner Bros. has released the trailer for Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17,” the long-awaited follow-up to the director’s best picture winner “Parasite.” Based on the 2022 novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton, the sci-fi thriller stars Robert Pattinson as an “expendable” employee named Mickey Barnes.

In the novel, Mickey is sent on dangerous missions to colonize an ice planet. When one version of Mickey dies, a duplicate is created to replace him that retains most of his memories.

“Mickey 17” is directed and written by Bong, who also produces through his company Offscreen. Additional producers include Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B and Dooho Choi of Kate Street Pictures.

Warner Bros. has nudged “Mickey 17” a few times on its theatrical schedule, most recently bumping the film from a March 29, 2024, date to its current January 2025 slot. When the move was announced, sources told Variety that the decision was made to secure an Imax release window and allow more time to finish the project, which had been affected due to the Hollywood strikes and various production shifts.

“Mickey 17” is Bong’s first feature to be released following the massive success of his 2019 thriller “Parasite,” which followed a working-class Korean family that deceptively infiltrates the home of an affluent family. “Parasite” was the first foreign language film to win the Academy Award for best picture. The film also nabbed Oscars for original screenplay, director and international feature. Bong’s other notable films include “Snowpiecer,” “Okja,” “Memories of Murder,” “The Host” and “Mother.”

Pattinson recently starred in the title role of Matt Reeves’s “The Batman” in 2022, bringing a brooding sensibility to Bruce Wayne. His recent sci-fi credits include Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and Claire Denis’ “High Life.”

When the first footage for the upcoming sci-fi flick "Mickey 17" was revealed back in April at CinemaCon, attendees were quick to ridicule star Robert Pattinson's nasally New York accent and the oddball tone of Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho's ("The Host," "Snowpiercer") latest Hollywood project.

A film adaptation of Edward Ashton's novel Mickey7 was announced to be in development in January 2022, with Bong Joon-ho writing, directing, and producing for Warner Bros. Pictures. Robert Pattinson was in talks to star in the film at the time of the announcement.[2] Pattinson was confirmed to star in May 2022, with Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo joining the cast.[3] In July, Steven Yeun was added to the cast.[4]

Production began at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden on August 2, 2022,[5] and concluded in December 2022.[6]

Charles Yu wrote additional literary material for the film.[7]

Mickey 17 is set to be released in the United States on January 31, 2025, by Warner Bros. Pictures.[8] It was originally scheduled to be theatrically released on March 29, 2024.[9] However, it was indefinitely taken off the release schedule in January 2024 due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and delays in post-production, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire instead taking over the date,[10][11] before the film received its new date a month later. In March 2024, it was announced that the film would be released in South Korea on January 28, 2025, three days before its global release.[12]

Robert Pattinson hates dying, especially after kicking the bucket 17-plus times for Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi-novel adaptation “Mickey 17.”

The feature, which marks writer/director Bong’s long-awaited follow-up to his Best Picture-winning “Parasite,” centers on Pattinson’s title character Mickey, who is a disposable employee called an Expendable. Mickey is sent on a human expedition sent to colonize ice world Niflheim; any mission that is considered too dangerous for humans is a task for Mickey. And of course, there are more than a few Mickey-related fatalities.

WGA Tells Members Not to Work for ‘Expendables’ Studio Millennium Films
Bong adapted Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7” but added more deaths for the lead character. The film project was first announced in January 2022, which came before the novel’s release in February via Macmillan imprint St. Martin. The film was originally set for a March 29, 2024 release before being pushed into 2025.

“Mickey 17” is produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, Dooho Choi of Kate Street Picture Company, and Bong under his Offscreen, Inc. banner. The behind-the-camera creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Darius Khondji (“Okja”), Oscar-nominated production designer Fiona Crombie (“The Favourite”), Oscar-nominated editor Jin-mo Yang (“Parasite”), costume designer Catherine George (“Okja,” “Snowpiercer”), and visual effects supervisor Dan Glass (“The Matrix” franchise). The music is by composer Jae-il Jung (“Parasite,” “Squid Game”).

Bong said during 2024 CinemaCon that he cast Pattinson in part due to the actor’s “crazy thing in his eyes.”

As for Bong’s other projects at Warner Bros. Discovery, his slated “Parasite” TV series has since been shelved. Tilda Swinton confirmed she was no longer attached to lead the HBO series adaptation in 2022. Swinton had previously collaborated with director Bong on “Okja” and “Snowpiercer.” “Mickey 17” actor Ruffalo was also set to star in the “Parasite” series, which was announced as a limited series akin to a six-hour movie.

“Succession” and “Winning Time” director Adam McKay was also behind the show, saying during MTV’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast in April 2021 that the series was “chugging full-speed ahead” with an “incredible writers’ room” after outlining the arc of the series with Bong during the COVID-19 quarantine lockdown.

“It’s an original series,” McKay said at the time. “It’s in the same universe as the feature, but it’s an original story that lives in that same world.”

Pattinson's Mickey voice is distinct and sounds unlike any of his previous roles. The trailer shows his seemingly endless cycle of death and regeneration being broken when he is about to die for the 17th time, hence the title Mickey 17, and encounters another version of himself, a phenomenon referred to as multiples.

The Mickey 17 trailer provides insight into Mickey, who is already solidified as one of Pattinson's best movie characters between the distinct voice and having to play multiple iterations of himself. Mickey seems easygoing to the point of it being perilous for him. He cheerfully signs up to be an expendable without reading through the full application and even lets himself be killed on one occasion so as not to inconvenience others. The game-changing moment when multiple Mickeys realize they are alive at the same time is when the story will truly begin to escalate.

Equally intriguing is Ackie's Nasha Adjaya, who is ecstatic at seeing Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 together, and Collette's Gwen Johansen, who says, "Let's blow up these second-hand baloney boys" with an air of disinterest.

While Pattinson is the clear standout in the trailer, the rest of the cast are also showcased, including Ruffalo's imperious Marshall, who declares that when there are multiples, all of them must be killed, and Yeun's character, Berto, who suggests Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 play rock-paper-scissors to see who lives. Mickey 17's premise and cast have been known for a while now, making it rewarding to finally see the first footage. Despite facing far different literal challenges than Parasite's cast of characters, Mickey 17 also explores socioeconomic injustices and the widening gap between the haves and have-nots through the lens of the callous way Mickey and the other expendables are treated. Mickey 17 looks like it will take bold creative swings, all of which will be grounded by relatable themes and compelling performances.

At long last, Warner Bros has unveiled the first trailer for Mickey 17, the Robert Pattinson sci-fi pic marking Bong Joon-ho’s follow-up to his Best Picture Oscar winner Parasite, which is slated for release on January 31, 2025.

Based on the the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, the film follows unlikely hero Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous —even suicidal — the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.

In addition to Pattinson, who as Mickey takes on an accent you won’t see coming, Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker), Steven Yeun (Beef), Toni Collette (Hereditary), and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things) star. The film is produced by Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Joon-Ho, and Dooho Choi. Brad Pitt, Jesse Ehrman, Peter Dodd and Marianne Jenkins served as executive producers.

It may have been delayed until next year, but at least we now have our first look at Mickey 17. The debut trailer for the sci-fi film — which is helmed by Parasite director Bong Joon-ho and stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes — premiered Tuesday evening. According to the trailer’s description, Barnes “has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.”

The movie is based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton, about “a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim.” The book follows the seventh incarnation of the titular Mickey, but it appears in the movie he dies quite a few more times. In addition to Pattinson, it stars Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Thomas Turgoose.

Mickey 17 will be Joon-ho’s first film since Parasite in 2019, and is slated to hit theaters on January 31st, 2025.

Mickey 17 is the next highly anticipated movie from South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho and we are dying to know more. Following the mainstream success of Parasite (2019), the first foreign-language film to win the Oscar for Best Picture, Bong Joon-ho returns to sci-fi with a film that promises big ideas and lots of heart. Here's everything we know about Mickey 17 so far.

The movie is an adaptation of Edward Ashton's 2022 novel Mickey7 (not 17), which explores "themes of identity and immortality." It garnered tons of praise upon release and a big-screen adaptation was announced soon after. The mix of the high concept at the center of the story, the setting, and the clever humor understandably made it a perfect fit for Bong Joon-ho. He's made a name for himself as one of today's most apt filmmakers working to tackle heavy-hitting drama and absurdist situations at the same time.

Mickey 17 was originally scheduled to be released in the United States on March 29, 2024. It was, however, taken off Warner Bros. Discovery's theatrical schedule earlier this year, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire moving up to take over its slot.

So, why did Warner sacrifice such an attractive spring release? The explanation is quite actually simple: 2023's SAG-AFTRA strike had a major impact on a number of productions, including some that had already wrapped their principal photography. In the case of Mickey 17, which was shot in 2022, this affected its reshoots and therefore delayed the extensive post-production process too. On top of that, Warner Bros. Discovery believes Bong Joon-ho's next movie may be another big win with huge awards potential, making a winter 2025 release logical.

As it stands (we wouldn't be surprised if it's brought forward a bit), Mickey 17 will be released in the United States on January 31, 2025. Of course, it's coming exclusively to theaters.

If there's a mission that feels too dangerous, the crew uses Mickey. If he dies, a new body is 'born' with most of his memories intact. Without getting into deeper spoilers, things get a bit more complex when Mickey7 is presumed dead and Mickey8 is generated; two "expendables" co-existing is a dangerous thing. Meanwhile, the colonization of Niflheim is going poorly, with the odd native species living there growing more and more curious. Soon, the story becomes more than just about the survival of Mickey7 and 8.

While the first trailer for the adaptation is meaty, most of the actual plot is being kept under wraps, although we can see that, at some point the Mickeys band together against the system. The synopsis that was released a while back teased a pretty faithful take on the novel, but you will have likely noticed the movie is titled Mickey 17. Why is that? Well, Bong Joon-ho's answer at CinemaCon 2024 was quick and to the point: "The number is the number of times he died. I killed him ten times more."

Bong Joon-ho (Parasite, Okja) directed the movie from an adapted screenplay of Mickey7 written by the author, Edward Ashton, himself. Cinematographer Darius Khondji (Midnight in Paris, Uncut Gems) teamed up with the filmmaker following their collaboration on Okja (2017).

Yang Jin-mo, another regular collaborator, has returned to edit the movie following his Oscar nomination for Parasite. Likewise, music composer Jung Jae-il is also coming back after working with the filmmaker on Okja and Parasite.
