Para OR Normal Guyz | Spaceships, Furry Tales, and Firefighters: Stories You Never Knew Existed

69

First up we have Keith Hanks, a retired firefighter and EMT, who spent 21 years serving his community in various roles, including educator, training officer, and fire prevention expert. His life has been marked by incredible personal challenges, from childhood trauma and the tragic loss of his first wife to the mental health toll of his profession. Diagnosed with Complex PTSD in 2015, Keith has turned his struggles into a mission to advocate for mental health, addiction recovery, and suicide prevention among first responders. His work has garnered international attention, including a feature in the Deconstructing Stigma Project and his participation in several documentaries focusing on first responders' mental health. Keith shares his deeply personal story and how he is working to break the stigma surrounding mental health in the first responder community through his organization, Traumatic Strength.

Then we’re joined by Mary E. Lowd, a prolific science fiction and furry writer, whose work often features spaceships and talking animals. With over 200 short stories and a dozen novels, Mary has won numerous awards, including multiple Ursa Major, Leo Literary, and Cóyotl Awards. Mary’s contributions to the furry and sci-fi communities are vast, from leading critique groups to editing anthologies, and she continues to inspire with her imaginative and whimsical storytelling. We explore her creative process, love for furry fiction, and the fantasy world she's built in her work.
