Bruce Banner wasn’t the first man transformed by science into a monster. Dr. Lecter wasn’t the first man of science to become a monster. Nor was Buffalo Bill the first who was intent on shedding his old self in favor of a new, more preferable self. Harvey Dent was not the first honorable man to succumb to the duality of good and evil.
No, before all of those characters, there was Dr. Jekyll.
Robert Louis Stevenson, inspired by European folklore such as wolfmen and gothic literature like Frankenstein that came before his work, wrote the pinnacle of such stories in “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” published in 1886.
Dr. Jekyll, a tragic figure of a man who was drawn to a secret life, used his knowledge of medical science to free his inner, more animal nature in the form of the terrible and menacing Mr. Hyde.
Hyde, the evil to Dr. Jekyll’s good, perpetrates terrible crimes terrorizing London much like the true life and contemporary Jack the Ripper.
