ACLU Sues Over New Voter ID Law In New Hampshire

A new law that requires people to present an ID when registering to Vote has prompted The American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire to file a lawsuit.

The bill was signed by Gov. Chris Sununu last month, and eliminates voter affidavits, meaning people who try to register to vote at the polls without a photo ID will be turned away. In addition, people who are registering to vote for the first time, will have to show they are a U.S. Citizen.
The ACLU is claiming that the new Voter ID law is one of the most restrictive voter registration laws in the country and add an unnecessary burden on the right to vote.
According to the lawsuit, more than 950 people voted in New Hampshire by affidavit in the 2020 presidential election. Affidavits allow people to register to vote with out ID, then the Secretary of States office will confirm their citizenship after the election.

The law goes into effect after November 5th.
