Q&A - October 20th - Reticles, Red Dots, Adjustments, and more!
We just can't stop talking about reticles!
00:00 Introduction
00:16 Reticle Styles
Which style of reticle best suits you and what you're doing?
Most of the time, I prefer a plain duplex. As simple as possible, so as not to distract from whatever I'm looking at. It's not the best option for holdovers and has some limitations regarding Kentucky windage, but is usually enough to get by. (Side note - My trick is to aim at a completely different object or by using the reticle in an odd way. If I need to hold off a certain amount, I'll find either a particular rock or shrub to aim at, or will line up the lines of the crosshairs on arbitrary objects that suit my needs.]
Chris prefers more data, often in the form of the Christmas tree reticle. It's a great way to make snap adjustments, especially in a PRS style shoot. To make real use of the holdovers in the moment, you'll need to keep your crosshairs on the target. This way you can get an accurate idea of where on the christmas tree the shot has landed.
02:23 Red Dot Distance
"Can a red dot be used at distance?"
That all depends. If the dot is smaller than the target, then you certainly have a good chance. I sometimes find issue with bright targets (such as neon orange) providing a clear rim around the dot itself.
Whatever the case may be, a red dot is not designed for long range. It make work, but it's not the dot's forte. Typically, 200 yards is regarded as a red dot's limit. This isn't technically always the case, but it's a good rule of thumb.
06:12 Adjustments
Modern scopes adjust 'point of impact.' In practice, this means:
1. You have put the crosshairs on the target.
2. A round is fired, a hole appears in the paper
3. If the hole is not where the crosshairs had been pointing, move the hole toward the crosshairs
4. The next shot (and hole) should be where the crosshairs are.
Old scopes sometimes adjust 'point of aim.' This is the reverse in one regard: you'll be moving the crosshairs to the bullet.
09:44 Long Scope
1. The 10X booster only works the the parallax version of the long scope. Though it may be physically the right size to fit on other scope tubes, it will not work properly with them.
2. Use some loctite to hold the sunshade in place
