YouTube Shorts FAQ
What are the new changes to YouTube Shorts?
From October 15th onwards, YouTube Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long if uploaded in a vertical or square aspect ratio. Previously, only videos up to 60 seconds long could be classified as Shorts. Horizontal videos, regardless of their length, will not be considered Shorts.
Why are these longer Shorts being called "YouTube Trousers"?
This is a playful nickname some users are using since the 3-minute length blurs the line between a short-form Short and a longer-form video. Officially, YouTube still refers to them as Shorts.
Will these longer Shorts appear in the regular Shorts feed?
Initially, there might be some placement issues, and these longer Shorts may not appear in the Shorts feed. YouTube is working on resolving this and ensuring these videos are surfaced correctly.
How will the new length affect Shorts' monetization?
Despite being longer, these Shorts will still be treated as regular Shorts for monetization purposes. This means only the views will count towards monetization requirements, not the watch time.
Why could monetization be a problem with longer Shorts?
Longer Shorts might discourage creators because they won't benefit from the potentially higher watch time. For example, a 3-minute Short with an average 90-second watch time won't contribute to the watch hour requirement for monetization.
What's the issue with copyright and these longer Shorts?
Shorts longer than 60 seconds using copyrighted audio or visuals will be blocked entirely, even from being recommended. This is different from the usual copyright claim process, where creators might see revenue loss but not complete blocking of their video.
Why is YouTube implementing this copyright restriction?
It's speculated that this change is to appease music labels who might be unhappy about the potential for creators to use entire songs within a 3-minute Short.
What's the main dilemma for creators considering these longer Shorts?
The longer format might seem appealing, but the lack of watch time contribution towards monetization and the stricter copyright rules might make it less worthwhile, especially compared to traditional long-form videos.
