Google has rehired Noam Shazeer, who left in 2021 after they rejected his request to release a chatbot he developed with Daniel De Freitas. After leaving, Shazeer co-founded Character.Al, an Al startup valued at $1 billion. To bring Shazeer back, Google made a $2.7 billion deal with Character. Al for its technology. Now, Shazeer and De Freitas have joined Google's Al unit, DeepMind, and Shazeer will lead the development of Gemini, Google's next-generation Al model.
