Sue Gray's Resignation SHAKES Keir Starmer's Leadership

Right, so amidst all of the freebies and donations scandals that have marked Keir Starmer’s first three months in power, the cherry on top is now the resignation of his chief of staff Sue Gray, the woman who left the civil service to take up the job of directing Labour, somebody with some actual experience of leadership roles needed to do that, when Keir Starmer himself doesn’t have a scooby.
Ongoing bad headlines relating to the fact her wage packet was actually bigger than Starmer’s didn’t help either. Starmer’s overreliance on her showed a critical flaw in his judgment, that he needs his hand held politically and although there will be those looking at this resignation and saying, well Starmer was bound to need a fall guy to excuse all of the scandal he’s endured, and god forbid it be the guy who paid for most of it, Lord Alli, a guy who also seemingly rewarded Gray by financing the parliamentary campaign of her own son, Liam Conlon.
But in another show of poor judgment and Starmer’s own massive limitations as a political leader, Gray has already been replaced with someone I would argue is far worse and Gray hasn’t even really been dismissed, just shuffled into a brand new role, thus keeping her about. Starmer can’t stand on his own two feet and the public can see it too.
Right, so Sue Gray has resigned, somebody was bound to have to go as the scandals continued, somebody had to take responsibility, someone had to take the blame and well, it was never going to be Keir Starmer was it? The guy never apologises for anything, the man is incapable of saying the words I’m sorry.
Gray as chief of staff was always a likely target and she hadn’t helped herself in that regards. Being on £3K a year more than the Prime Minister is not a good look and while Starmer was taking clothes for himself and his wife from Lord Alli and all the rest besides, Alli had also given Gray’s son Liam Conlon a financial boost which will of course have helped him get elected as the MP for Beckenham and Penge.
She’s been a favourite target for the Labour right, was seen as having too much power by those for whom having power is everything, even when they have no idea what to do with it and that is also a direct reflection of Starmer’s judgment, so they’ll be delighted she’s gone, but whether they cheer her replacement too much that will remain to be seen, because if they have concerns about Sue Gray having had too much power, the guy who has already replaced her has had in my view a lot more for a lot longer and is a far worse prospect, because Starmer’s new chief of Staff is Morgan McSweeney, the architect of the downfall of Corbyn, the face of the man who destroyed hope for millions by decimating the reputation of Jeremy Corbyn and thereby removing the prospect of the transformative government and country run in our interests and not those of the establishment. Replaced by what Starmer has put on offer, you can see now just how badly we were robbed and he’s now the guy, if he ever stopped really being the guy, holding Starmer’s toddler reins as he staggers from one political calamity of his own making to the next. Again Starmer’s judgment, that judgment being I need these people, I cannot do the job without somebody telling me what to do and actually if Gray hadn’t done something by resigning, he would still be carrying on as he has been.
McSweeney is the guy who concocted the antisemitism scam that decimated the left of the Labour Party, he was formerly the director of the right wing Labour think tank Labour Together, which itself didn’t declare hundreds of thousands of pounds in donations, so he’s the perfect fit to take over in the midst of a cash for freebies scandal isn’t he? Not!
McSweeney was the General Election campaign manager for Labour, though frankly the Tories were so damned, anyone could have scored a win for Labour in that position this time around. No doubt where more moderate Sue Gray was seen by the Labour right as a problem, McSweeney is very much one of them and will ostensibly be able to do what he likes I daresay without much of a peep from them. We the general public might think differently once we become more accustomed to McSweeney’s machinations, both past and present and going forwards too.
But Gray hasn’t actually gone anywhere either. If Starmer wanted somebody to take a fall here, why instead of wishing Gray well and moving her on, has he instead reappointed her somewhere else after accepting her resignation? Again it comes down to Starmer’s bad judgment. He can’t do without these people around him somewhere, so instead of actually attempting to draw a line under all the scandal, he’s exacerbating it by keeping these people around, just having a reshuffle and hoping that will do. It won’t. it was Gray’s job to ensure Starmer & Co’s program for government got delivered, not withstanding all the U-turns and changing of minds of course, now that Starmer is in power and no longer feeling obligated to deliver on what miserable policies he had laid out and it all went to hell in a handcart because Starmer himself can’t say no to free stuff. What chance did Gray have? Perhaps it’s karma that McSweeney will now have to fight with Starmer’s constant acceptance of freebies now?
Gray herself has been moved to a new role acting as envoy for nations and regions, which means she’ll still be an adviser to Starmer, just on matters pertaining to building relations between devolved authorities and central government.
It’s just the latest disaster befalling this country at the hands of Starmer’s ineptitude and people aren’t fooled by it.
Keir Starmer is so bad, that he’s now actually made history with it, being the Prime Minister with the fastest fall in public opinion of all Prime Ministers of the last 30 years, the only exception being Liz Truss, though she didn’t actually make it to three months.
After three months in office, Starmer’s approval rating sits at just 27%. That’s 3% behind Rishi Sunak, 9% behind Boris Johnson and 21% behind the robotic Theresa May.
Keir Starmer is a walking disaster area, those around him seemingly falling on their swords to save government face whilst he just carries on regardless, completely inept, promoted way beyond his abilities and to coin a phrase, things can only get worse.
