The remarkable city of Syzran was founded as a fortress in 1683

It is located on the right bank of the Volga, where the Syzranka River flows into it. According to one version, the fortress got its name precisely because of this hydronym.

Fires occurred quite often in Syzran. The most terrible and destructive occurred in 1906. Then, due to a strong wind, the fire engulfed the entire city center in a matter of minutes. More than 4,000 buildings burned down.

After the fire, craftsmen from the Yaroslavl, Kostroma and Nizhny Novgorod provinces were brought in to restore the city. The work was organized on an artel basis, and the buildings in the city were erected without preliminary projects and estimates.
