The osprey, also called the fish hawk, is a big bird that loves to eat fish. Its scientific name is Pandion haliaetus. These birds are really good at catching fish - they can dive into the water and grab them with their sharp claws. Ospreys have special features that help them fish, like oily feathers that stop them getting too wet, and spiky bits on their feet to grip slippery fish.
You can find ospreys near water, like lakes, rivers and coasts. They build big nests high up in trees or on poles. Ospreys are found in lots of places around the world, but they nearly died out in the UK because of harmful chemicals. Luckily, people have worked hard to bring them back, and now you can see them in places like Scotland and Wales.
Ospreys are quite big birds, about the size of a buzzard. They have dark brown backs and white bellies. When they fly, you can see a bend in their wings that looks a bit like an M shape.
