I SMOKED a Giant Bull!

I can’t even begin to tell yall how thankful I am for the opportunity to hunt such amazing animals with such a great group of people.

When ‪@huntinfool_official‬ called to tell me I drew a Unit 13 New Mexico Archery Elk tag, I was sitting in the car with my best friend. Her wedding is in September, and I was giving her a hard time for having it during hunting season. When they told me the dates for the hunt, we both just looked at each other. Her wedding date was right in the middle of it. We went into this hunt knowing we wouldn’t have many days to get it done. ‪@g3outfitters94‬ set me up with Pierce. He and Joel know the unit like the back of their hands, and they can both leave me in the dust running up and down those hills.

On day 3, after close calls, heartbreaks, and loads of stress, we woke up to the sound of bugles that could be heard from the inside of our tent. We went in, but the wind wasn’t right. We backed out, found a glassing point and, after about an hour and a half, we spotted some cows and knew he had to be close. Joel stayed up top to keep eyes on them. We went in a piece and waited. As soon as we heard him sound off, we made a move. ‪@jeffbarron70‬ brought along a cow decoy that attaches to the front of a bow. Dad came up with a plan. We got it set up, Pierce set back and called, and we heard him start racking a tree. Me and Dad hid behind the decoy and snuck up as close as dared. He spotted the decoy, took a few steps out of the woods and stood staring at us from behind a limb for what felt like an hour. He checked off, took a couple steps, turned broadside, and I drew back. I stopped him with a pretty pathetic sounding cow call and sent an arrow at 43 yards. He ran about 200 yards before piling up.

New friends became family. We made some unforgettable memories, had the time of our lives, and got one beautiful bull to take home and fill the freezer. Cooking elk steaks in the new house will top off the whole experience. Can’t thank y’all enough!
