In the intricate landscape of the tumor microenvironment, it’s not just about cancer cells—it’s about the dynamic interplay between macrophages, iron metabolism, and oxygen levels.

🔬 The Role of Macrophages:
* M1 Macrophages: Pro-inflammatory warriors that export iron, bolster the immune response, and suppress tumor growth.

* M2 Macrophages: Immune-suppressive cells that store iron, leading to a weakened immune system and promoting cancer progression.

🌡️ Oxygen’s Influence:

* In normal oxygen levels (normoxia), M1 macrophages dominate, enhancing immune function and inhibiting cancer.

* Under low oxygen conditions (hypoxia), there’s a shift towards M2 macrophages, resulting in iron accumulation that fuels tumor growth and dampens the immune response.
