The Shadows Beckon

In the dead of night so dreary, as the wind was wailing, weary,
Through my window, cold and eerie, crept a shadow on the floor.
Faint it flickered, slowly weaving, like a soul forever grieving,
As if silently beseeching, seeking entrance evermore—
And my heart, it felt the longing, of this specter at my door—
Yearning there, forevermore.

Wandered I in thought unspoken, where my dreams lay dim and broken,
Through the chambers long forsaken, to that dark and hollow shore.
There I saw a ship come sailing, with no wind or stars prevailing,
Yet the silence held me failing, as it beckoned to explore—
Called me forth from light and life, to seek the realms of nevermore—
To return, ah, nevermore.

With a heart of wild devotion, I gave way to dark emotion,
To the sea of endless ocean where the light would fade no more.
There I sought the lost, forgotten, souls whose hearts had turned to rotten,
And beneath the waves begotten, I heard whispers from the floor—
"Come," they called, "join us, forever—leave this mortal coil’s shore—
Be at rest, forevermore."
