The Green Children of Woolpit - medieval mystery & urban legend of the Dark Ages
The wolf pits, from which the village of Woolpit took its name, hold the key to the mystery of the 12th century “Green Children”.
The gray wolf will avoid men, because man will stand upright, like the bear, and the wolf fears the bear. - Thus will the wolf fear man, unless the wolf has had contact with many people.
In England, during Medieval times, is where the village of Woolpit, got its name from the wolf pits that dotted the farmland. A wolf pit was dug six feet or more into the soft soil. The bait was the leg of a cow, thrown into the pit, which then was covered with branches.

A couple miles to the north, was a settlement of immigrants from Flanders, in the neighboring village of Fornham Saint Martin. They spoke the Flemish language, and they all worked as Fullers. This was the worst job of the Middle Ages.
The country of Flanders is the next-door neighbor of France. When the floods came, the Flemish migrated to England. They brought with them the loup-garou.
The nature of the loup-garou can be repressed only by silver, and the Flemish are known to use the collar as a barrier between humanity and lycanthropy. Like all amalgams of silver, contact with the skin will turn it green.
Arriving at the field in the morning, when the farmers checked the wolf pit, they found in it, the two green children.
They were brought to the landowner Richard de Caine, whose manor was only six miles away, by foot.
We cannot know, if de Caine was a greedy man. He would surely have recognized the Flemish tongue. He could have made inquiries in nearby Fornham Saint Martin, as to who might have lost their children.
Today we know, the level of proteins and amino acids in plain beans, very closely approximates those found in fresh meat. They smelled in these beans the essence of life, and so saved their own lives.
The child died under de Caine's care. Now it was in Richard's best interest, and the best interest of the church, that the remaining child be hidden from any Flemish probe. He made the girl, Agnes, his family servant.
The female of the loup-garou is more cautious than the male. But as she grew into adulthood, she was desired by any man in the village who beheld her, including Richard Barre.
