US, Israel Discuss Joint-Response to Iranian Attack, Warn Tehran of "Severe Consequences"

World leaders have called on Iran and Israel to de-escalate after Tehran launched a wave of missiles at its long-time rival. The attack occurred as Israel began a ground offensive against Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group operating in Lebanon. Tehran said the strike was retaliation for the killings of Iran-backed leaders of the Hezbollah and Hamas groups. This is the second time Iran has directly targeted Israel this year, following a missile and drone assault in April in response to an Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria.

President Joe Biden instructed the US military to assist Israel in its defence and intercept any missiles aimed at the country. Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the Iranian assault as “totally unacceptable.” He added that initial reports indicated Israel, with active US and partner support, successfully thwarted the attack.
