BIOLAB Georgia Chemical Plant Fire: Thousands Evacuated

Thousands of residents east of Atlanta were evacuated, while others were advised to shelter in place on Sunday due to a fire at a chemical plant that released a massive plume of dark smoke visible from miles away.

The Georgia Department of Transportation reported that Interstate 20 was closed in both directions near the site, causing significant traffic backups.

According to Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel, the fire started around 5 a.m. at the BioLab plant in Conyers after a sprinkler head malfunctioned, leading to water mixing with a water-reactive chemical, which caused the chemical plume.
