Episode 247 | Double Amputee, US Army Combat Veteran

In June 2006, Army Sergeant Adam Poppenhouse went on his first deployment as a tanker with the 3rd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division to Iraq. On Dec. 3, 2006, he and his company were securing a crash site and rescuing a pilot when SGT Poppenhouse’s vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) in Taji, Iraq. During his combat deployment he suffered catastrophic injuries that resulted in the amputations of both legs, and was awarded the Purple Heart.

During his recovery Adam found a love for wrenches and racing. Today, Adam is an avid racecar driver and is an active member of Resilience Racing and Race to Erase 22. These nonprofits are committed to advancing adaptive hand control technologies, and harnessing the benefits adrenaline and throttle therapy has for injured Veterans. Adam enjoys throttle therapy of all sorts and is a proud husband and father.
