I have tested quite a few headsets from SoundPEATS before and they have always been decent quality but otherwise pretty much the same. This new one is different and has a more unusual design. I have tried one piece rear mounted headsets before but this is the first one with an on-ear - open ear, as SoundPEATS put it - format. Soundpeats produce three very similar headsets - the Runfree Lite (this one), the Runfree, and the Runfree Lite2 with not a great deal to choose between them.

In the attractive mid market product box I received the headset itself, a rather short charging cable and a user guide. Build quality was up to the usual SoundPEATS high standard, with everything feeling well made and of a high standard.

The one piece 27g headset is mounted around the rear of the head supported by the ears and with the speaker resting on the ears and not in the ear canal. This makes the super flexible headset very comfortable to wear even for long runs over extended periods. There are two pods just above each ear, one containing the battery and the other the control panel. There are just three buttons: Up, Power and Down and they can be used in combination for all the expected audio, track and call controls and to invoke the phone's digital assistant.

The larger form factor gives two distinct advantages. Firstly, it uses 16.2mm speaker drivers, much larger than earbud headsets will allow, which gives a much superior sound quality. It also means a larger battery can be incorporated and the one here can give a run time of a remarkable 17 hours between charges. Charging takes a couple of hours and uses the gromett protected USB-C port in the control pod.

The headset uses Bluetooth 5.3 which allows for fast and stable connections, long range and easy pairing. This headset can connect to two Bluetooth sources simultaneously. To do so after pairing to the first phone, keep the headset turned on but switch off Bluetooth on the first phone and pair to the second. When the first device is turned on again it will automatically pair to the headset simultaneously with the second.

Another good feature of this headset is that it uses the SoundPEATS app - currently being replaced by the new PeatsAudio app - to monitor battery status, apply preset and custom EQ profiles, adjust volume, change audio mode, and update the firmware. Most interesting is the Adaptive audio feature which plays a range of audio frequencies to create an audio profile tailored to your personal hearing.

This headset is perfect for sports use due to its extended battery life, light weight and comfort, easy access to music and call controls and excellent sound quality. The only slight problem is that it is only IPX4 water resistant, which means it is fine for light showers and sweat but take care not to immerse it in water or use it for long periods in heavy rain.

For the price of £34.99 before discounts, you will get a very comfortable sports headset with excellent audio and a range of other features.
