Developers Refuse to Hire Woke Activist After Stint with Sweet Baby Inc!
Former Sweet Baby Inc. Employee Reveals Why Developers Didn’t Want to Hire Him After Working With Kim Belair’s Company
In a recent Twitch stream, uncovered by YouTuber Smash JT, former Sweet Baby Inc. employee Hashimoto opened up about his career post-Sweet Baby, shedding light on some controversial aspects of game development, particularly surrounding Assassin's Creed Shadows.
During the stream, Hashimoto shared that working for Kim Belair’s company, Sweet Baby Inc., may have inadvertently hindered his ability to secure new opportunities. He revealed, “There are definitely jobs I’ve had where people saw I worked for Sweet Baby and asked, ‘Hey, are we going to get harassed for hiring you?’” It's clear that being tied to Sweet Baby Inc. has left an impact, with some developers being hesitant to hire him due to potential backlash or controversy.
This revelation follows comments made by Belair herself, who, while speaking on the Black Girl Gamers YouTube channel, stated that the online noise surrounding Sweet Baby Inc. was “annoying” but didn’t materially affect their work. Hashimoto’s experience, however, suggests that the stigma of association with Sweet Baby Inc. may have more lasting effects, particularly for individuals trying to move forward in the gaming industry.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Controversy
Hashimoto’s revelations didn’t stop there. The conversation turned toward Assassin's Creed Shadows, a game that’s become the subject of online debate. The character Yasuke, a Black Samurai, has stirred some controversy, but Hashimoto clarified that much of the pushback has been from Western audiences, often based on mistranslated comments. He stated, "It was people in the West who were upset with seeing Yasuke as a samurai," adding that most negative comments in Japanese appeared to have been poorly translated from English.
Hashimoto's insights come as Assassin's Creed Shadows faces growing scrutiny for historical inaccuracies. He pointed out issues like buildings and clothing being incorrect, and even mentioned that the art team allegedly stole a sign from a reenactment troupe in Japan. These errors, he explained, can arise from working with large teams of artists from diverse backgrounds, making communication a challenge, especially when language barriers come into play.
Behind the Scenes of Sweet Baby Inc.
While Hashimoto didn’t directly work on Assassin's Creed Shadows, his time with Sweet Baby Inc. left a mark. He touched on the collaborative nature of consultancy in game development, explaining how consultants offer suggestions but have no control over whether their ideas are implemented. He shared, “People don’t understand how much power a director and producer have in a studio, and whether or not they will facilitate those changes.”
It’s no surprise that Assassin's Creed Shadows has become embroiled in the woke controversy. Some fans have criticized the game for perceived “woke” content, especially the inclusion of Yasuke, a Black Samurai, as a central character. This has sparked debates among the Assassin's Creed fanbase, with some claiming that Ubisoft is pandering to modern trends. The game's historical inaccuracies have further fueled the fire, as Hashimoto pointed out inconsistencies in architecture and attire.
However, Hashimoto emphasized that the backlash is largely a Western phenomenon. He remarked that most of the outrage is being driven by outsiders using Google Translate, which misrepresents the actual sentiments of Japanese players.
The Impact on Game Development
Hashimoto's experience working with Sweet Baby Inc. and the response to Assassin’s Creed Shadows shines a light on the complexities of game development today. From navigating the demands of political correctness to managing the fallout of controversies, it's clear that the industry is in a challenging position.
