Sweet Baby Inc. Consultant EXPOSED for Attacking Gamers in NYT Assassin’s Creed Hitpiece!
Ubisoft Under Fire for Assassin's Creed Shadows' Woke Agenda as Japanese Consultant Revealed to Have Ties to Sweet Baby Inc.
In a recent hit piece, The New York Times and Ubisoft worked together to attack critics of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a game stirring major controversy. The outlet's Zachary Small cited a supposed "Japanese consultant" and translator who claimed that criticism over Assassin’s Creed Shadows—including its choice to feature Yasuke, the famed Black Samurai, as a protagonist—was primarily driven by Western audiences. This consultant, Hashimoto, argued that the negative comments about the game, which appear online in Japanese, had been poorly translated from English.
According to Hashimoto, “It was people in the West who were upset with seeing Yasuke as a samurai.” Small added that Hashimoto explained, “many of the negative online comments written in Japanese appeared to have been roughly translated from English.”
Ubisoft, however, had already issued an apology to Japanese players over Assassin’s Creed Shadows following backlash, which Small himself noted. He pointed out that Ubisoft apologized for promoting materials that allegedly offended Japanese audiences. Yet, the Assassin's Creed Shadows controversy grew heated enough that a small right-wing political party in Japan formally asked the government to comment on the game's historical inaccuracies.
But here's where it gets even more controversial: It turns out that Hashimoto, the so-called "Japanese consultant" used to defend the game, was a former employee of Sweet Baby Inc.—a company with ties to woke gaming agendas. His LinkedIn profile reveals that he worked at Sweet Baby Inc. from February 2020 to April 2023, suggesting that Ubisoft may have brought in a consultant who had a direct stake in shaping the narrative around Assassin's Creed Shadows.
Not only does Hashimoto have ties to Sweet Baby Inc., but he's also an activist journalist who has written for Polygon, Siliconera, Them, and outlets owned by the GAMURS Group. In one article on Medium, Hashimoto criticized Animal Crossing: New Horizons by addressing “Japan’s history of colonial rule.”
The controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows keeps mounting, especially with the game now being accused of pushing a woke agenda through its depiction of Yasuke as a Black Samurai. Fans are also upset about Assassin’s Creed Shadows' gameplay and the game's portrayal of Japanese history, calling it period-inappropriate and culturally insensitive.
With the trailer for Assassin’s Creed Shadows stirring heated debates online, fans are left wondering whether Ubisoft can recover from this woke controversy. The game, which includes Japanese rap in its soundtrack, has further alienated audiences who feel the game prioritizes modern narratives over historical accuracy.
As Assassin's Creed Shadows prepares to launch, Ubisoft is facing ongoing backlash from both the West and Japan. From questions over Assassin's Creed Shadows' gameplay authenticity to the narrative-driven portrayal of historical figures like Yasuke, it seems the controversy is far from over.
What do you think of Ubisoft Assassin’s Creed Shadows and its depiction of a Black Samurai? Is this another case of woke pandering, or is it a bold move by Ubisoft to diversify its games?
