In this 'spoiler free' #bookrecommendations, I go over Willard Sterne Randall's biography of George Washington. I discuss how his life is often mythologized in both a positive and negative extreme, when a more balanced view of this historically important person would be more prudent. I go over his Masonic membership and how it influenced his views on God, religion and politics. His views on slavery and free speech are discussed within the framework of modern understandings of these issues. As a military mind, his record doesn't seem to demonstrate a great strategic mind but his political influence has been undeniable to this day.
