Cops BODY-SLAM Innocent Man
Deputy Michael McMaster, who was involved in the violent arrest of Tyler Canaris in March 2022, has faced "significant consequences". After a dashcam video surfaced showing McMaster slamming Canaris to the ground, resulting in multiple severe injuries, McMaster was placed on administrative duty.
Eventually, he was terminated from the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. However, his termination was reportedly due to policy violations unrelated to the specific incident with Canaris. McMaster had a troubling history in the department, with numerous reprimands for aggressive behavior and other misconduct stretching back to 2015.
As of now, a civil lawsuit has been filed by Canaris, accusing McMaster of excessive force and seeking damages for the injuries caused. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) conducted a use-of-force investigation, which was handed over to the district attorney for review, but no criminal charges have yet been confirmed against McMaster. Canaris continues to face obstruction charges despite being cleared of any involvement in the car break-ins that led to his detention.
Despite the life-altering injuries suffered by Tyler Canaris-fractured skull, broken clavicle, ruptured eardrum, and traumatic brain injury-Deputy Michael McMaster's primary consequence has indeed been termination from his job, not criminal charges. Even though the Paulding County Sheriff's Office initially claimed his firing was due to unrelated policy violations, McMaster has not faced significant legal punishment so far. The fact that his termination wasn't directly linked to the excessive force incident has sparked even more outrage.
For many, simply losing a job seems grossly inadequate for the gravity of permanently impacting someone's life. While there is an ongoing civil lawsuit and a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe into the case, McMaster hasn't faced criminal charges to date.
This lack of accountability beyond job dismissal reflects deeper concerns about how officers are often shielded from the full legal consequences of their actions, especially in cases of excessive force.
