The Balmoral Cairns are a series of 16 stone monuments located within the Balmoral Estate in Deeside, Scotland. Erected by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, these cairns commemorate significant events and milestones in the lives of the British royal family, including marriages and birthdays.

History and Significance

The first cairn was built in 1853 to mark the purchase of the Balmoral Estate by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Subsequent cairns were erected to celebrate the marriages of their children, including Victoria, the Princess Royal, Alice, Helena, Louise, Leopold, and Beatrice. The cairns were also used to commemorate Prince Albert’s death in 1861, with a large pyramid-shaped cairn erected on the grounds of Balmoral Castle.

Walks and Views

Visitors can explore the Balmoral Cairns on a scenic walk through the estate, which offers stunning views of Deeside and Balmoral Castle. The walk is approximately 4.5 miles long and takes you through a mix of woodland and open countryside. Be sure to respect the privacy of the royal family and estate residents, as the walk is not accessible when they are in residence.
