A team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is developing and testing an innovative, snake-like robot known as EELS (Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor).

Designed to explore the subsurface ocean of Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus by descending through its vents, this highly adaptable robot is built to autonomously map, navigate, and investigate remote destinations on Earth, the Moon, and other celestial bodies in our solar system.

EELS has been tested in various challenging terrains, including sandy, snowy, and icy environments. These trials have taken place in settings such as JPL’s Mars Yard, which simulates Mars-like conditions, a "robot playground" created at a ski resort in Southern California’s snowy mountains, and even an indoor ice rink.

Given the communication delays between Earth and deep-space missions, EELS is designed to operate independently. It can sense its surroundings, assess risks, travel, and collect data using science instruments yet to be finalized. The robot is also built to recover from errors autonomously, without relying on human intervention.

Development on the first prototype began in 2019, with continuous refinements being made. The team has experimented with various materials, including white, 3D-printed plastic screws for softer terrains like sand and snow, and sharper, black metal screws for icy conditions. The current version of the EELS 1.0 robot weighs around 220 pounds (100 kilograms) and measures about 13 feet (4 meters) in length.

The EELS project is funded by JPL’s Office of Technology Infusion and Strategy through the JPL Next technology accelerator program. JPL, which is managed by Caltech in Pasadena, California, has collaborated with several universities on this project, including Arizona State University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of California, San Diego. As of now, EELS is not part of any official NASA mission.
