The Eliatic School of Philosophy - Parmenides, Zeno of Elea, & Melissus of Samos (Pre-Socratic)

The Eleatic school of philosophy, founded in the 5th century BC in the ancient Greek city of Elea (modern-day Velia in southern Italy), is known for its metaphysical doctrine of monism—the belief that reality is singular, unchanging, and indivisible. The key figures of this school were Parmenides, Zeno of Elea, and Melissus of Samos, who rejected the notion of multiplicity and change, arguing instead that all of reality is one and unchanging. Their ideas were formulated as a response to the materialist views of earlier philosophers like the Ionians, who believed the world was composed of multiple, changing substances. The Eleatics challenged the evidence of the senses, arguing that reason and logic reveal the true nature of reality, which is beyond appearances. Parmenides, the school's central figure, held that "being" is eternal and unalterable, and that change and diversity are mere illusions. Zeno is famous for his paradoxes, designed to demonstrate the impossibility of motion and plurality, defending the monism proposed by Parmenides. Melissus further developed these ideas, arguing that "what is" must be infinite and incorporeal.
