What is Spirituality? | What Prevents Awakening? Why Do the Masses Resist the Greatest Gift Offered?

Why do the masses resist the gift of spiritual awakening? The masses, bless their hearts, are asleep at the wheel. They resist awakening like it’s an unwanted blaring loud alarm clock; preferring the sweet oblivion of ignorance and lazy sleep. Why? Because awakening requires change, and change is terrifying. It requires confronting the ugly truths we’ve buried under layers of denial. It requires perseverance.

The masses cling to the ego’s narrative, the comforting stories that paint them as victims, as sinners, and as separate from one another and the divine. The ego has convinced them that they are safer in the dark, that the light of truth is too blinding, too harsh. But the real reason for this resistance? It’s easier to remain asleep, to follow the herd, to avoid the discomfort that comes with true spiritual growth. Awakening is a gift, yes, but it’s also a challenge—a challenge that most would rather not face. TV is easy.

So yes, the ego once again appears to be behind this as well. A Course in Miracles says, “If the ego is the symbol of the separation, it is also the symbol of guilt. Guilt is more than merely not of God. It is the symbol of attack on God." Problem is, the ego’s entire thought system revolves around guilt, sin, and separation. And according to the course, the ego is insane, and it is at war with God. Yet our world has bought into the ego’s thought system and now blindly accepts and believes everything in it.

True spirituality is about stripping away the illusions, the comforting lies we tell ourselves to avoid facing the void. It’s about confronting the stark reality that we are not these bodies, these identities, these egos we cling to so desperately. Spirituality is the relentless pursuit of truth, a journey inward that often leads to more questions than answers. It’s not for the faint of heart. There is an escape from this dream; a way out.

For starters, letting go of the guilt, the shame, and the sense of unworthiness that the ego has fed you for so long will get you on the right path. See through the ego’s lies and recognize the truth of your divine nature. The real world, the world of peace, love, and unity, is already here—it’s just been obscured by the ego’s fog of fear and guilt.
