Akron, Ohio — On Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 1:04 a.m., Akron Police officers were investigating a stolen U-Haul they observed in the parking lot of the Arco gas station in the 2,200 block of East Avenue. Two Akron police officers pull up to the gas station behind the U-Haul. Just as one officer approached the truck, it began to drive away before the officer knocked on the driver's side door. The U-Haul stopped and the officer opened the door.

The first officer asks Jones to step out of the car. Jones took off his seat belt and began to get out of the car, but then asked why he was under arrest. A chaotic scene unfolded as Jones began to accelerate the vehicle while the officers attempted to gain control. During the struggle, one of the officers fired two shots, fatally striking Jones. The two officers handcuff Jones and drag him out of the vehicle, the video shows. They lay him on the ground and begin administering first-aid. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. After the shooting, officers found a loaded handgun in the vehicle, according to the release.
