Vero Beach, Florida — On August 16, 2024, at around 2:14 p.m. a deputy from the Indian River County Sheriff's Office (IRCSO) observed a sport bike traveling at an estimated 115 mph in a 45 mph zone on State Road 60 near the Vero Beach Outlets. The deputy activated a radar gun, confirming the speed at 120 mph, and immediately initiated a pursuit. As 22-year-old Austin Schwartz, continued to flee, both IRCSO deputies and Vero Beach police joined the ground chase. Meanwhile, the IRCSO helicopter, HAWK, tracked Schwartz from above, capturing footage of the motorcyclist weaving through traffic and navigating busy roads during peak hours. The dangerous pursuit placed numerous other drivers at risk, according to the sheriff's office. The chase came to a halt when Schwartz clipped the side of a truck at the intersection of 17th Street and Indian River Boulevard, causing him to crash the sport bike. He was promptly taken into custody and booked into the Indian River County Jail on charges of reckless driving and fleeing/eluding law enforcement but was released on a $40,000 bond.
