Wait Expectantly
We read in Psalms 5:3,
"In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly."
What exactly does David mean by "wait expectantly"? Some translations say "eagerly watch".
The Hebrew word here is "sapa" (tsaw-faw'). It means: to look out or about, to observe, to keep watch.
David prays to the Lord and keeps watch, remains aware and observes around himself and in front of himself as he waits for the Lord's response to his requests.
Why is David waiting in such a way? Because he has faith that God will answer and he doesn't want to miss it.
How often do we lay our requests before God and move on with our day with no further thought about it? Do we miss the little answers that will lead up to the full answer to our prayer?
Maybe we asked for healing or financial help or relationship help. But when we finished the day, we saw no healing, no change in our finances, no improvement in a relationship. But did God carry us through the day? Did he help us persevere? Did he give us peace? Did he give us strength to carry on for another day? Did he provide for our needs that day?
We must live with the expectation that God will show up as we lay our requests before him. He will never fail us. He is our faithful Father.
The Prophet Jeremiah waited expectantly with faithful hope as we see in Lamentations 3:19-24,
"[19] I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. [20] I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. [21] Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: [22] Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. [23] They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. [24] I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”
As we wait, let us eagerly watch, remain aware and be observant of the little responses from God each and every day. Let us watch with our hope fully in His never-ending faithfulness towards our well-being. He may not answer us in the way we desire, but he will answer us in the way that it is needed and in His perfect timing. We can be confident in that. And one day, those little daily responses will lead to the full response as we wait expectantly.
