Don't use today even if your ass falls off - DUTEIYAFO

Body text:
If I don’t use today, I won’t get loaded. It’s simple, isn’t it? Actually, it really is just that simple. Please note: I did not say easy.
It’s highly unlikely that anyone just accidentally stumbled into a bottle of whiskey, a hit of drugs, a harmful sexual encounter, a gambling house, or any other form of escape. As I am an escape artist, I live to avoid pain and seek pleasure. Escapism is my natural state... If I have taken the suggestions from my predecessors and changed my playgrounds, playmates and playthings, the odds of mistaking my soda for your boozy one decreases exponentially. Half the battle, right? Sure, it’s just not the whole battle.
Using isn’t something that happens by accident. It is a choice. If I choose to keep company with dangerous using environments, sure, I might end up with the wrong drink. But as someone who is responsible for my actions, or inactions, I am still accountable for the choice to be there. After the fog lifted a little, I realized. Using is always a choice. Often, it comes down to choosing between facing a difficult, painful situation or escaping it. It’s measurable and predictable.
As I spend time around others who are on the path to recovery, it is pretty common to hear about someone’s relapse… relapse happens. I hear the stories, the reasons, or more accurately, the excuses. Please understand, the reason, is why it happened; the excuse, is how it's not my fault. Hearing this so much, I could start to believe that I must relapse to be serious about this process, but nothing could be further from the truth. Relapse is not a requirement for recovery.
It’s really not that complicated. While I will face setbacks in life, in relationships, or in finances, using, seeking the solution to my challenges that stopped working so long ago, still doesn’t work. I must always hold firm to the truth that I’m responsible for my recovery, for my choices, for my life. I am responsible.
Let me repeat this, it is important enough to do so, It is possible to live a life beyond my wildest dreams, fully engaged in recovery and never relapse.
I repeat this because, For some, believing that relapse is required for recovery just sets me up to fail before I even start. A dangerous reservation. Every day I stay clean, I build a stronger foundation for a life free from addiction. And even if I stumble, it doesn’t mean I can’t restart the path to recovery, it just means I need to stop using, drag myself back to my support system. Relapse may happen for some, but it’s not inevitable
