The first trailer for Mike Leigh‘s latest feature “Hard Truths” had been unveiled, showing its lead star Marianne Jean-Baptiste embarking on an angry rampage against supermarket check out clerks, unsuspecting members of the public and her family.

“People, can’t stand ’em,” she exclaims in the trailer, released ahead of the film’s world premiere in Toronto on Sep. 6. “Cheerful, grinning people.”

“Hard Truths” sees legendary British auteur Leigh return to the contemporary world after “Mr. Turner” and “Peterloo” with what is described as a “fierce, compassionate, and often darkly humorous study of family and the thorny ties that bind us.”

Reunited with Leigh for the first time since the multiple Oscar-nominated “Secrets and Lies,” Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a woman wracked by fear, tormented by afflictions, and prone to raging tirades against her husband, son, and anyone who looks her way. Meanwhile, her easygoing younger sister, played by Michele Austin (“Another Year”), is a single mother with a life as different from Pansy’s as their clashing temperaments — brimming with communal warmth from her salon clients and daughters alike.

As the synopsis reads, the film takes audiences into the intensities of kinship, duty, and the most enduring of human mysteries: that even through lifetimes of hurt and hardship, we still find ways to love those we call family.

Bleecker Street will release “Hard Truths” for an exclusive qualifying run on Dec. 6 and in theaters nationwide on Jan. 10. It will also be screening at NYFF next month.
Secrets and Lies star Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a woman prone to raging tirades against her family, in the trailer for Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths that dropped ahead of a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

“Why are you so angry? Why can’t you enjoy life,” Pansy’s sister, played by Michele Austin, asks at one point in the teaser trailer. “I don’t know!” Jean-Baptiste’s character shoots back.

But Leigh’s latest film, a drama about family and the thorny ties that bind us, suggests with the trailer that a lifetime of hurt and hardship has Pansy wracked with fear and emotional afflictions and attempting a halting reconciliation with her long-suffering sister.

Hard Truths
Hard Truths will have its world premiere at TIFF on Friday at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Secrets & Lies, which premiered in Cannes in 1996, winning the Palme d’Or, featured Jean-Baptiste as a well-off Black professional who seeks out her biological mother, a poor white factory worker living in East London, played by Brenda Blethyn. Jean-Baptiste was Oscar-nominated for her performance, and it marked her international breakthrough.

Other Leigh regulars returning for Hard Truths include producer Georgina Lowe, cinematographer Dick Pope, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, production designer Suzie Davis, composer Gary Yershon and casting director Nina Gold.

Bleecker Street pre-bought Hard Truths and will release the film theatrically in the U.S. later this year. Studiocanal is releasing the movie in the U.K., while Cornerstone Films is handling international sales. Co-financed by Film4, Hard Truths is a Thin Man Films and The Mediapro Studio co-production, made in association with Creativity Media

The trailer for Hard Truths, starring Academy Award-nominated actor Marianne Jean-Baptiste, was unveiled by Bleecker Street, on Wednesday. The film comes from legendary filmmaker Mike Leigh and also stars Michele Austin in a prominent role.

The trailer shows Pansy (Jean-Baptiste) as someone who has been hurt and insecure over the years due to discrimination and inflictions, and therefore finds it tough to take life with a pinch of salt. Her sister (Austin), on the other hand, is happy-go-lucky, although she is a single mother of two girls. How the latter teaches the former to embrace life as it comes forms the crux of Hard Truths.

The official synopsis of Hard Truths reads, "Pansy is a woman wracked by fear, tormented by afflictions, and prone to raging tirades against her husband, son, and anyone who looks her way. Meanwhile, her easygoing younger sister is a single mother with a life as different from Pansy’s as their clashing temperaments - brimming with communal warmth from her salon clients and daughters alike. This expansive film from a master dramatist takes us into the intensities of kinship, duty, and the most enduring of human mysteries: that even through lifetimes of hurt and hardship, we still find ways to love those we call family."

David Webber, Tuwaine Barrett, Ani Nelson, Sophia Brown, and Jonathan Livingstone round out the cast of Hard Truths. The film is scheduled to make its debut at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024, and also at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival and the 2024 New York Film Festival.

A release date for Hard Truths is yet to be announced.

There are legions of fans for Jackie Chan across India, and they are in for a "treat". Chan's film A Legend, which released in Mainland China earlier this year, will soon hit theatres in India in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and English. A sequel to The Myth, the Stanley Tong directorial is billed as an "exceptional mix of action, adventure, drama and fantasy." The film stars Chan as a present-day archeologist and as an AI-based young soldier.

According to the A Legend domestic distributor, Viswaas Films, it will be a "treat to Jackie Chan fans in India." It also stars Lay Zhang, Na Zha, Aarif Lee, Li Chen, Peng Xiaoran, and Zheng Yechen in key roles.

The story follows Chan's Professor Fang character who discovers a striking similarity between the texture of the artefacts, which his students discovered on a glacier adventure, and a jade pendant from his dreams.

Nosferatu writer-director Robert Eggers dropped the first official poster for Bill Skarsgård's character from the film through an Instagram post the other day. The poster does not show the face of Count Orlok, also known as Nosferatu, the vampire based on Bram Stoker's Dracula. It only shows Orlok's hands protruding from his clothing, which hangs loosely from his shoulders. Eggers captioned the post, "Succumb to the Darkness."

The film tells the story of a vampire (Skarsgård) who grows a sense of infatuation with a woman (Lily-Rose Depp). In an interview with Esquire, Skarsgård said, "It is playing with a sexual fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you. Hopefully, you will get a little bit attracted by it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time.”

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe, and Nicholas Hoult are also part of the cast. Nosferatu is slated for a December 25 release.
